Default Buying a first car [UK]
Thinking of either:

306 1.4
206 1.4

Or, anything else thats sensible. Any suggestions guys? I really am starting to like the 206.. is a 1.4 quick enough?

Looking to spend about 1500-2000 on the car, but the insurance is also a big factor, so nothing stupid please

EDIT - Also, anyone know any good insurance companies for first time drivers? im 17, no NCB etc... just passed. Confused are normally good but recently there quotes have been ridiculously high... quinn direct seem to be giving me better quotes atm.

I'd get a Seat Ibiza 1.4. Group 4 insurance I think so shouldn't be too steep as cars go. It's basically the same as a VW Polo but cheaper. Better quality than most French cars.

Try here for insurance:

lol, Chris is gonna be all over that post.

@OP

Try Endsleigh as well. They've given me the cheapest quote by far.

And a 1.4 is pretty good.

Ok will try endsleigh tomorrow morn, as the engsleigh site appears to be down atm. Well, at the end of a quote it keeps loading forever!

Anyone actually have a 206? can give me some feedback?

Insurance:
Male, 17, Just passed, on a 1.4 206, Third party fire + theft

Quinn direct give me £1700ish
Direct Line give me £1759
Confused.com give me about £2300 as the cheapest

Why is it so expensive? I remember a few months ago i was getting quotes of 1400 or less on simular cars from quinn direct and direct line! Anyone got any tips on how to further reduce this insurance? Im willing to do pass plus if it will lower it considerably, also.. is it true if you phone them up they can do you a cheaper deal?

Another thing you could consider is getting a cheaper car and only getting third party fire and theft insurance. This is probably what I will do when I get my first car.

Edit: Where do you live? That can make quite a difference to insurance. Would be worth asking some insurers how much you'd save by doing pass plus. In a few years it wont make as much difference to your quotes though.

OMG!!!

Just tried putting my dear old mother as primary driver, and me as secondary (since direct line are nice and still let you earn no claims...) and guess how much it is now?!

£750.75 - Third party
£1,184.40 - Fully Comp

No way! Kick ass!

No point in pass plus now.

Are direct line good? would this therefore be the best option for me? I would still earn no claims.. right?

Yes i did, about 1600-1700 on my own :O

Ridiculous, i got quoted on a dturbo 306 1.9 for 1400 with them a while back. makes no sense! Direct line seem to be the best so far

Isn't that completely illegal though, I mean if you're going to be driving it as the main driver, then you need to be down as the primary driver, not just someone who'll be driving it on the odd ocasion.

It's hard to prove, but it could bite you in the ass, when you least need it. We all know insurance companies can be really harsh, they don't like giving away money.

My first car was a Golf GTI ... so buy one of those [thumbup]

Id avoid French cars and Rover/MG's as they dont have a manufacturer anymore.

VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda etc) are very reliable, so a 1.4 Lupo/Polo/Ibiza/Arosa/Fabia would be a good idea.

What's illegal about having insurance while you're driving? Driving is expensive as it is in this country, so I couldn't give a rats if I was taking advantage of cheaper insurance for my first year of driving as I just paid a load to buy the damn thing. [thumbdown]

Anyway I'm a named driver under my stepdad's name (one month remaining) and i'm the one who drives my car more than anyone else (obviously). I recently had someone go into the back of me with minor damage, but the insurers repaired it without any hassle. The rear of my car does look better than before as the back bumper used to have one or two scratches.

they are mostly the same car underneath anyway, so getting the cheapest of the 3 Volkswagen brands is the best idea

Definately decided on a 206 i think, but they can be expensive from dealers (EDIT- VERY)
but... private prices seem to be ok, a few bargains to be had..

However can anyone please recommend some car sites? Autotrader has a few bargain 206's but they all are sold when i phone up literally i phoned about 9 cars and 8 wer sold... the 9th was too far!

*if* you like the styling, some prefer the look of the Ibiza over the Fabia for example or the Golf over the Octavia etc

206 is a hairdressers car!
Get a 306!

much nippier and nicer looking!
If you get the right model they are very reliable and long wearing. Check out

http://www.pug306.net forums

Id also recommend a 1999/2000 HDI ( turbo diesel model ) they are fast, cheap on insurance and fuel efficient.

Look for something below 75k miles and you will have a nice little car

I wanted a 306 dturbo first. but changed my mind after speaking to a few mechanics and was generally put of the dirty old diesel idea

but ive decided on the 206, 306 are heavier, and no doubt a 306 1.4 would be sluggish? also, this 206 1.4 is cheaper to insure

and it looks nicer

I said it was illigal to be the main driver, but to be insured only as the second driver. People do it all the time, but it doesn't make it any more legal.

The engines in 206s arnt quite as powerful, i wldnt really recommend a 1.4 either way, diesels all the way or a 1.6 would have much more power enough to find that your fuel efficiency is better due to the fact you arnt dropping gears as much to speed up, also a 1.6 is virtually the same in insurance terms.

hmm i really really like 306s they are just gorgeous, far nicer looking than virtually all hatchbacks on the road.
