One thing I miss about living at home is having access to high speed cable internet. I currently live in an apartment building for college students, and the residents here have access to a reasonably fast internet connection. What kind of connection it is I don't know, I just plug the Cat 5 into a jack on the wall. Download speeds are around 50 - 60 kbps.
I had a bit of a scare when I moved in because the property manager told me online games where not allowed. However, after giving the ISP a call I learned, much to my relief, that online games are allowed. The ISP does block P2P applications though including bittorent. The other day I saw a Youtube link posted on a messageboard and when I clicked on it the page would not load. No big deal I thought, Youtube must be down. But when I clicked on another Youtube link today and it didn't load I started to get suspicious. So I used a tunneling program and surely enough Youtube loaded. I guess I probably shouldn't complain since the ISP is free, but I just wonder what they will block in the future. High speed cable is available in my town, but on a college student budget it would be hard to justify. |
