Default Aluminium - why oh why?
http://gsmarena.com/certain_black_ip...-news-4844.php

This is not only Apple's problem. (I've had it in a watch and some other accessories) I know it looks great but the paint chips away even if you breath towards the device.
With proper coating it can be avoided. But how often have you seen it done well?

If they made them to last what would they sell you next year?

Essentially the same thing, worked for them since the original iphone.

Yeah, but the paint chipping off is just extra incentive.

Since it's mostly just a fashion accessory anyway, who wants one with chipped paint, I mean really?

You're probably holding it wrong. Anyway, Apple has already addressed the issue. Apple sells a single-use, touch-up paint kit for $39.

I'm having a difficult time with this article. They mentioned anodizing and paint in the same paragraph, like they are the same thing. Anodizing is not paint. Anodizing of aluminum creates a layer of aluminum oxide on the surface, which will harden the surface. Depending on if it's done right, your surface will be much harder than before. A good anodizing looks great and shouldn't just fleck off so easily. If it's so easy to come off, I would imagine that it is probably powder coat or actually paint.

Of course, we're talking about a product that's probably engineered to last about a year or so at most, so I can't imagine that Apple would pay top dollar for a proper hard anodizing job.

Well, whatever process they used to coat it, it's chipping off.

Article from The Verge.

Exactly, that's apple's "innovation" in action.

the comments below that link made me lol ---

#First-world problems It’s not the iPhone’s fault. Your box is holding it wrong.

Stick a bit of gaffer tape on it, too, for that Compton look

Seriously you guys, stop bashing Apple when you have no idea what you're talking about. If you had bothered to read about the awesome new features of the iPhone 5 you'd know it's the new color changing feature.

HAHA damn that sucks ass. I wouldn't be surprised if someone put that coating under the microscope and discovered it's cancerous. The chinese took the "try to make it even cheaper" suggestion a little bit too seriously or so it seems.

I think I'm going to wait for v2 revision aka 5S... or maybe not.

Guys it is ok. The phone is superior. Apple thought of everything! This is why they sell the revolutionary iPhone 5 case for $44.99. Never get a scratch on it!

The corporate mantra at a company I used to work at was "we do what is right". They forgot to add the "for the stockholders" bit at the end, though. I believe that the same goes for Apple.

I'm wondering the same. If I bought my phone like that, I'd be taking it back and demanding a "brand new" phone. Maybe Apple are hoping many won't bother going back or even looking.
