I simply desired to let people learn about this amazing youngsters' book illustrator who is actually an Orthodox Christian. His name is Gennady Spirin. Although there are occasional flashes of Byzantine influence, particularly in his representations of angels, his lovely, rich pictures are deeply indebted to the Renaissance. Some of his publications are on Biblical subjects (The Lord is My Shepherd, The Creation) and the others are centered on Russian folktales, like The Sea-King's Daughter). I especially like The Lord is My Shepherd, where he demonstrates Psalm 23 with a beautiful remodeling of Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights (it is also focused on ROCOR's Metropolitan Laurus). Anyway, I recommend any one of his publications, whether you want good material for the kids or you just want to savor some very art work with a modern master.
