I don't see any reason to burn bridges with people. You don't have to do them favors or talk to them much, but in my opinion there's no harm in keeping in touch.

Or they're just plain irritating. The friend I broke off contact with would do things like ask for math help (he was studying for the GREs) and then argue with me about math. "What's 5 * (2 + x)?" "10 + 2x" "Why?" "Because of the distributive property." "I disagree with the distributive property!" "Ummm... no, you're an English major, you're not allowed to disagree with the distributive property." "I can and I will!" "Welp, have a nice life."

EDIT: Come to think of it, it's not that hard to demonstrate the distributive property.

I told him to plug in numbers for X to prove that the equation was true. He said that 5 * (2 + x) = 10 + 5x was not the same thing as, e.g., 5 * (2 + 10) = 10 + 50. Why? I'm sure he could have quoted some obscure English poet to prove his point if I had let him.

If I answer honestly, what should my answer be? Um, if you're being honest, you shouldn't have to have Polytubbies answer this question. She obviously has a need to show she can still pull your strings. If you give her that ability, there will be consequences.
