Er, why would you use an old oil barrel as a bbq anyway?

And enjoy the petro-chemical taste?

Seems dumb when you can just go buy the same thing for probably similar investment, far less hassle, and no leftover oil residue.

When I was in Iraq, I had a person come to me asking me to make them a BBQ grill and they brought oil drums for me to use. The guy was stationed at one of the comm relay points out in the country. I always refused to use anything that carried any type of chemical. Since all I had at the time was ballistic steel, I made a grill using that instead. I found out the week I was shipping back to the states that the guys at the relay point were using it pretty much every day.

Could have used a more explosive headline.

I only know that an oil barrel would blow up after reading this.

I expect oil to catch fire, not explode.

Oil will catch fire. The vapour (remains will have evaporated) is explosive. Technically, you could say the same about petrol, too, I guess.

I know that now. But I didn't. I don't think this is darwinism, it's one of those things you either know or you don't.

Why not? Loads of people do. Big, cheap and durable.

And a deer doesn't know not to stand in the headlights. But if one is born that has a fear of bright lights at night instead of a fascination of them, it will presumably have a better chance versus vehicles, and live longer than its brethren. Darwinism.

If you're telling me that you instinctively knew that an oil barrel would explode when chopped in half then I'm going to go ahead and call you a liar.

It shot into the air and cleared a fence, so there was obviously a huge release of energy from the inside after the fumes ignited. Was the drum even air tight? I have to say i'm slightly surprised at the outcome.

I know that its the fumes that ignite, and not the liquid itself, and I would have at least opened the cap and checked inside the barrel before I took power tools to it.
Even your argument that you only thought it would start on fire, isn't that enough to tell you that maybe you shouldn't be setting fire to things while you're working on them? Come on man.

And we've all played video games before. What happens when you shoot an oil barrel? Go ahead and tell me how they don't explode.

Most people know that. My point of contention is that not many people know that oil generates explosive fumes in a sealed barrel and I don't think you (or I) are in that small group.
