Default Audiobook Thread
Who here listen's to audiobooks? With the advent of the mp3 player, I became an avid audiobook listener. I know most people just warez the audiobooks, which is unfortunately a product of how they are marketed/sold/prices but they are getting better in that department. Anyways, I am going to list some of my favorite audiobooks... and while the material is important, the reader or readers are really what makes of breaks an audiobook, so I am focusing on those readers who left the best impression.

Game of Thrones (Song of Fire & Ice) read by Roy Dotrice.

The Dark Tower (stephen king) read by George Guidall (as an aside, if you have read this series and are a fan (who isn't that has read it all?) king recently released what he calls book 4.5. It is basically another story of Roland growing up, and is a lot like wishing glass in that regard, and very enjoyable)

Salem's Lot (stephen king) read by Ron McLarty

World War Z there is a whole cast of readers for this one.

Lestat books (Anne Rice) read by Michael York. All I can say is this guy becomes Lestat.

Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) read by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer. She reads the female perspective, he reads the male.

Any of you have any favorites?

Maybe 300. I'd say they average 20 hrs each. Though a few might be closer to 40.

Well worth it, regardless the length. Commutes are so much better with a good story.

The whole concept is great. The magic system in those books is one of my favorite, right there with David Edding's Belgariad.

I like their magic system, I just wish they understood the magic. For the most part they are winging it on feel, which is a cliche you can also find in the Sword of Truth series, above, also. It is so bad in that series the main guy actually gets a "magic for war wizard dummies" type book. Not that it helps him.
I forget who reads that series, Bigjenko, but they do a good job too.

I have been attempting to get into audiobooks recently. I travel an hour to work each day by car problem with some heavy reading material it is often difficult to concentrate on the book and driving so it needs to be a happy medium of something which you can absorb easily. Obviously actual reading you can sit down and read anything!

I started out with something which didn't requite much concentration, Michael Mcintyres audiobook is excellent I would really recommend listening. He reads it all himself and it is very funny and went through quite a bit to get where he is.

Currently listening to Gunslinger, cannot remember who is reading it.

Yeah, a physics book or something Sparafucil might read for fun isn't the best fare when driving. I typically go with the adventure/magic books just for that reason. The gunslinger is one such book (book 1 dark tower series). IIRC king redid that book in the last decade or so. I guess he started writing that in the early seventies and want to clean up some discrepancies. Has Roland made it to town yet? I think that is where things start to get interesting in that book.

He is one of my all time favorite characters. Roland, the last gunslinger, the last of the blood of Arthur, following the man with no name on the path to the Dark Tower... a tower that has had an effect in one way or another on every story King has ever written. And Stephen King has written a lot of stories.

--- Post Update ---

I think Ill give that series a listen.
SoT is one of the best I have heard, at least until book 5-6. Problem is, it is a 12+ book series. It is good after book 6, it is just by that point half of each book is used retelling all the books before it for the new reader that just jumped in, and it is about that point where Goodkind really starts to get preachy. But you will love Zeddiccus.
