Shame to see yet another high street retailer closing, but I don't think anyone wouldn't have seen it coming. Why would I into Clinton's and spend £2-4 or more on a greetings card when I can go next door into Card Factory and buy one for 89p? Greetings cards have been vastly over-priced for years. Since a Card Factory shop opened locally I always go there for cards. |

I'm not sure why Clinton Cards were so expensive. They bought most of their paper through PaperCo (directly or indirectly), who also sold to most other card manufacturers so it's not like they had high overheads there.
It's a sign of the times that an internet retailer has forced a high street retailer out of business. |

When you say something is "vastly over priced", you're making a significant judgment about the value of the item to yourself, the person you're giving it to and the value of the work that goes into it. It's hardly surprising that everything is cheap and crap, and made by tiny hands the other side of the world, when people are too freaking tight to spend 2 quid on something to express a thought. |

It's a piece of folded card with some printing on it. It probably costs them pennies to make. I can buy cards of exactly the same quality in Card Factory, but much much cheaper. I generally try to buy cards with designs by local artists etc - it's not like you do it every day, and not like you wouldn't p1ss the money away on some other indulgent BS if you got the 50 cent card as opposed to the $4 card. ![]() |

£2-3 seems expensive to the consumer but the overheads of running a shop on the high street are very high. Clinton Cards certainly can't compete with someone like Tesco who make a small margin per card and don't care either way. It's supermarkets that are largely responsible for the death of specialist shops

Does anyone else hate sending / receiving cards?! I HATE THEM! I hate having to send someone a birthday card (which is often late) and to have to get a stamp and then walk to the nearest letter box and then they get annoyed that I sent it late - it's just a pointless card!?!? and they also get annoyed when you've just written your name and the word 'happy birthday' - what more do they want? Samuel Johnson's ****ing life work?!
![]() and when receiving them, WTF are you meant to do with them? I don't have any room to put them up and worst of all my Mum always ****ing keeps them?! WHY?! I haven't lived at home for years but whenever I go back to rummage through my old stuff I find a load of birthday cards stuck together by a mouldy old elastic band. **** me, I just want to throw them in her log burner or send them back to everyone who sent them. |

That was the issue, the words in the card were sparse and not very good in the majority of them. Not only that but they charged sometimes £4-£5 for them. I have no issue paying for quality, but Clintons were not that great. When I buy a card, it is all about the words, as I want to get a message across. |

I usually take a picture of my tackle and use this as the front cover and make my own card with the words "cop a load of this... all the best". I find a picture of my penis covers many situations that requires the sending of a card. It can cheer people up who're down, it's great for the missus on our anniversary, reminds her what we used to get up to before we were married... all sorts of uses. ![]() |
