Default Drive - Most Overated Film In Years Or A Glorious Tour De Force? -
Have to say, watched it last night on BluRay and possibly the most dissapointed I've been with a film in years. After all the hype, all my mates telling me what a great film, all the great reviews... dull as ditch water... kinda knew what it was going for, but too much of that M. Night Shyamalan "glazed look and do nothing" type thing... must've been about 15 minutes of nothing. Was expecting alot more. The music was nice, very nicely used and the acting was passable... and the credits were very pink lol... can't give this more than a 5/10, so will be passing the BluRay on me think . Maybe I just missed the point of it all... who knows. Reminded me of early Michael Mann, bit Miami Vice... ManHunter in it's use of lighting and music... unfortunatley, that's all it was a music video...

Every film doesn't fit everyone's tastes I suppose. I've got TinTin to watch tonight... not sure about that one either but bought it anyway lol.

Watched a few other films this week... remake of The Thing... not bad, certainly one of the better remakes/prequels... Pandorium... very nice little film there... dont' think that even made it to the flicks in the UK, can't remember it anyway... nicely done... Candyman... now this is a weird one... I used to love this... YET watched it now, it's dated really badly (and the person who put this to bluray needs shooting as it's got one fo the worst HD Masters I've seen to date)... to the point that I found the acting a little poor, script poor... the storyline is still strong though and a nice ending but was dissapointed... weird how things change with time... some do some don't. It's why I won't watch ET... worried it won't be the film I watched back in 81' when I was 7 years old lol.

So, anyone enjoy Drive then?

My exact sentiments. Overhyped and dull. Wasted 10 quid on the blu ray. I suppose it's a bit like Marmite.

I really liked it and the tone of it was spot on for me. Is strange how different films are taken in such different ways by people.

And the pink font was supposed to be part of the retro feel wasn't it?

Pretty much sums up this thread.

Liking the Thing Remake over Drive simply means you have absolute crap taste in films.

It only gets better as you get older, IMO.

Drive is alright, but certainly overrated - had it not been for the soundtrack... and the robbery scene at the start of the film it wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable. For a movie named drive, it lacked.

Stake Land, I recommend everyone see it - my only main gripe is that it ended.

Drive was good, and I enjoyed the 80's throwback soundtrack. But I'm fairly certain Gosling's character had some form of retardation. The dialogue was outright painful.

Nope it means Drive is rubbish, boring, awfully scripted tedium. The Thing was simply a remake of a classic film that was solid for a remake [yes] Original thing, 10/10, new Thing 7/10. But hey, I'm sure your taste in films is superb... I bow down.[yes]

You probably should, my taste is beyond most.

It is sad you will never enjoy the finer things in life.

I would recommend you Transformers 3, it might be more to your liking.

That's a notion you need to get rid of, I was mentioning this in another thread.

The way some people look at films, with a nostalgic bias which prevents them from really enjoying the film. Even it means thinking less of it.

You really can't appreciate films like that.

Nah, the problem is that we aren't the people who watched the movies back then - we're older and changed by our life experiences and growing maturity (well, for most of us, at least) which has changed what are tastes and expectations are.

Yeah, that's what I mean't.

The only reason we probably like the film in the first place is because we were naive impressionable kids.

I used to love Led Zeppelin between the ages of 18-22, they I realized that they are nothing but the equivalent of a 70's King of Leon.

After developing my taste I don't keep holding on to old habits, I moved on.

Drive was a terrible movie. I did manage to suffer through it, but overall it was very meh. As far as entertainment value goes I think The Thing was better. At least with that I was expecting a cheesy B movie.

The plot wasn't bad but some of the acting was crap and I hated Gosling's character. I dunno if it was the character or the way he portrayed him but I wanted to punch him in the throat. It felt like he was trying to be Clint Eastwood and failed miserably at it.

I have replied to your other film thread.

I think that your outlook on films is pretty horrible and not appropriate at all to properly appreciate films.

Slightly patronising no? I for one agreed with his opinion on both The Thing and Drive... doesn't mean we can't appreciate films because we don't like a film that seems to be getting a ton of praise? No Country For Old Men was another, I "partly" enjoyed it, the acting was superb, but it dragged... I'm all for a slow burner and it went on another 10 minutes that it didn't need to.... Personally, currently if I was to take around 20 films to a desert island (one with a 58" Plasma and 7.2 Suround like home lol), that others will or will not agree with... personally my top films are the following (which does vary and isn't definitive apart from Shawshank staying the best film ever made, the others tend to vary in ratings due to my mood [rofl]). I'll be ready to be flamed alive... I'm sure there's others I've not listed here...
  1. Shawshank Redemption
  2. Bladerunner
  3. Gladiator
  4. The Green Mile
  5. Predator
  6. Brotherhood Of The Wolf (watched in subtitles)
  7. Nikita (watched in subtitles)
  8. Beauty & The Beast
  9. Once Upon A Time In The West
  10. The Crow
  11. 28 Weeks Later
  12. Kick Ass
  13. The Rock
  14. Rocky IV
  15. Insomnia (Pacino Version)
  16. RoboCop
  17. The Prestige
  18. The Terminator
  19. Sunshine
  20. The Wrestler
Ones I know are Classics, some easy viewing that cheer me up... some real thought provokers... some sad... all a little varied I know... but if you asked me right now which films I'd take, this list would be close.

EDIT: After putting this list together so easily, it does show just what and how many great films are out there! Sure there's another 100 people could add to this list?

You probably should, my taste is beyond most.

It is sad you will never enjoy the finer things in life.

I do love the patronising nature of your replies, superb... you almost look like you have intelligence there... hidden quite well though... but think there is something there.

However as for Transformers, nope... I hated every one of them, sorry to disapoint pal.

I accept opposing views on films and am willing to accept proper critiques of films but I can't stand it when people dismiss a film for all the wrong reasons.

What I mean't was that I read posts by you guys about films and it seems to me that some of you are more concerned about categorizing the film and endlessly trivialising it than to really appreciate and criticize.

There are a lot of factors beyond taste which make a film good or bad, a lot of people dismiss the film just because it doesn't fit within their usually strict "taste" criteria.

Hmm I havn't actually got round to watching it yet... I got bored after about 20 mins and watched something else. No country for old men was good I am not sure why you didn't like that.... I agree on the Shawshank redemption being one of the ebst films ever made though.

Except Gosling's dialogue in the movie was horrible.
