To protect the girl from the massive vehicle, the Rhode Island National Guardsman lifted the girl out of the way, but the armored truck ran him over.

Weichel later died from injuries he sustained and the girl survived, according to the news outlet.

My deepest respect to this brave man. [rip]
As a father he couldn't just watch the young girl being killed, he saved her but paid the ultimate price.

In case the Taliban is plotting something horrific in the wake of the mass killing by that US soldier, I hope this changes their hearts for the better.
