I'm the same way. I always fail the nerd test when posted here.

I can imagine things from dfg's POV. Everyone must appear to be a nerd to him.

Among the kids I used to blaze with I was "John the Nerd". Around here I'm more like "Felch the Pothead". Alby is right, nerd status is contextual.

I found out here, nerd is a complement. I was shocked when I found out. I guess the status and term of nerd is different to all places.

Asking around, a nerd is a person that is looked up to and would be a person of wisdom. This is what I could only ascertain.
