60 is a joke. Most people are just unbelievably lazy. For the last half year of my PhD I was working ~110 hours a week.

Usually around 8-10 hours / day, including weekend... --> ~56-70 hrs / week
as I can do most of the (programming) work @ home time spent for transit isnt too much
(if they appear I label them as worktime however )
as my usual sleep time is ~6 hours a day, there is usually enough time for other things besides working
(unless at crunch times when there might be more hours/day spent with work)

As someone living in the paradisial states of Western Europe, I have trouble imagining this.

Is that a five-day work week, meaning twelve hours per day?
Do you perhaps count your lunchbreaks among those sixty hours??
How many hours do you spend in transport between your workplace and home?
How many hours do you sleep per night?
When do you buy your bread and other stuff? Aren't the shops already closed by the time you get home??
Do you have kids?
Do you have hobbies?

When I worked at a supermarket back in high school, I worked from 12am til 9am in the summer.

That's what always annoys me when I go to Europe: it's like the bloody USSR all over again. I know the shop assistants would also like to work a 40-day week, but how am I supposed to buy anything? Here in Moscow I have two 24x7 supermarkets within walking distance, and you can buy stuff like electric appliances and clothing 12x7, from 10 to 22.

Some weeks I only work 32 hours If you count breaks as working, then I've fairly regularly done simple 60 hour breaks, 0815-2030, 5 days a week.

5 minutes travelling (total)
I eat on the job, because you have to eat with the patients
I generally only need to buy a loaf, some milk, cheese, eggs etc once a week and it lasts, because I eat all of the food at work, which they provide
Around 7 hours of sleep a night. Usually one night a week I sleep less because I end up doing something when I get home.
No kids
A couple of hobbies.

No social life though. Truth be told, I'd rather work 60-72 hour weeks and save the money, than have the time off, but I love my job. And obviously I'm such a sad act I have no other distractions in my life.

In germany this is changing for the better finally...
shops are usually open till 8 PM, often even till 10PM from monday till saturday.
And shops at railway stations are allowed to open on sundays as well,
which is why many large railway stations nowadays resemble small shopping centers,
with suprmarkets and other shops, that are open 7 days a week

I've never made more than $13/hour in my life. That's around $26K with 40-hour weeks.

$40K would be more money than I'd know what to do with.

I have worked that many hours on occasions but it is rare, and I will always take the hours back when times are easier.

It's the great thing about City workers, they earn all that money, but due to their hours their hourly rate is probably about the same as that of a milkman
