I was playing with some guy the other day and he told me he thought he had the game figured out, he then goes out and shoots 110.

Be patient with the game, remember the little things you do, hand posistion on the club, stance, things like that.

But remember the game is fun, the minute you start taking it seriously is the day you lose.
luvda i found something for you to help you not take it too seriously.

Two ways to slice. Open the clubface at impact, or swing out to in. You fix both of those and you won't slice anymore.
You should swing inside to outside and square the club at impact to hit a good shot. Turn your shoulders, don't just swing with your arms. Don't swing hard, it's all timing.

If I know all this, then why am I still a 12 handicapper? Aargh.
Right...I know what I'm not supposed to do, I just can't not do it. I just I'm looking more for good "practice" techniques than actually what is wrong...

I can hit a straight shot, just not consistently...I know what to do right, I just haven't been able to train my body to do it consistently

Hey all, I've got a bitch of a slice...any suggestions??
I assume you've tried rotating your top hand over a bit ?? That can also really wreck a swing "worse" ...

Same with stance adujustments.

I'd suggest closing the clubface slightly at address, then work on coordinating the "rolling" wrist through the shot ... trying to "picture" the slice being caused by "blocking" the ball in softball-type swing -- while a straighter shot (or draw) will happen if you work on bringing that top hand over (subtly) as you complete your downswing.

Or ... just "play the slice."

I've closed the face to the point that the face is nearly facing the ground...and I straighten it out a bit. I'm sure I'm opening my shoulders up too much, but I just can't seem to shake it. Of course, then there's that one dog leg right that suits my shot perfectly, and I wail away...and it goes about 300 yards...straight...arrrrggggghhhh

Anyway, I do try to play the slice, but it's more of a boomerang action...almost guaranteed 90 degree turn...
Well, I did have a similar-type slice shot, almost 20 years ago when I started playing sorta regular.

And I just can't remember back that far. There is something to be said for "consistency" ... ;-) ... but I certainly understand the frustrations of it ...

That's really what you "pay" for isn't it ??... well, that's the way it was for me ...

There is no substitute for just playing and playing and playing .... which is something wives and significant others LOVE to be understanding about ...

Yeah, so for a few rounds, I had my slice under somewhat control...still had it but was able to play around it...then last Wed I played and was absolutely HORRIBLE. I was so pissed. So I went to the range Thursday night...and from the get go, I either hit the ball absolutely straight or with a bit of a hook. How's that for inconsistency.
You might be swinging too fast when you're playing for something...like a good score.

Always happens to me in pressure situations if I don't consciously make an effort to s l o w d o w n. Believe me, you don't even know you're doing it (swinging too fast).

The advice about taking a lesson is also golden, although Luvda doesn't like it.

That's not bad. Some men I play with can't hit it much further than that and they've been playing golf for awhile.

I meant to point out how disturbing this was at the time ... but I let it go.

But this is just waaaay beyond being ok in my pants.

Ok. First check all of your fundamentals. Check your feet alignment, check your shoulder alignment, check your waist alignment. Make sure you're headed straight down the target line. Then check your grip. Put a tee between your thumb and forefinger on each hand. If they line up with the club face, you've got a good grip. If not, adjust it.

If all those are good, which I doubt they are, (I played competitive golf for 7 years, and I still fall into bad alignment and grip), then check your swing path alignment. Go straight back, don't bring the club outside. then check whether you're coming down out to in or whether you're straight. If you're coming in straight, then your clubface is open. Make sure your left wrist is flat at impact, and not cupped (wrist bent backwards a bit).

This is so much easier when i can show people. I'm really thinking about going to school to learn to teach golf. I wonder how long it takes to start making good money after you graduate from one of those schools.

Heh, that's the beauty of fundamentals, ryr. They can all be checked and corrected without thinking about them during the swing. And they are SO important.

Now, the swing path is something you will have to think about. But you should check that w/o swing a real swing.

My tip of the day for any golfer beginning through pro: Set a club down everytime you're at the driving range. Make sure you're practicing good alignment. And they also have those practice grips. I suggest everyone get one of those.

Watch the pros, and then swing in front of a mirror. Or videotape yourself with a vidcam on a tripod.
If you're real serious pay $50 and take a lesson from a pro.

A lot of pros tape you when they give you a lesson, then give you the tape. I haven't had a lesson in 2 years, since my favorite pro moved on to a better job (head pro at a private country club). I'll tell you that they help immensely, especially if you have a good pro.
