Default League/tournament formats
So, this thread may exist somewhere but I searched and couldn't find it. I'm looking for good ideas on fun league and/or mini-tournament formats among members. Both season-long leagues, and then miniature events that could be played within an existing group, but that isn't the purpose for that group.

One example was a handicapped 9-hole/match double elimination match play tournament that a club I was a member at had. It was open to any member, but about 2 dozen of us signed up. There was a designated time to play each week, but if you couldn't make that you could make arrangements with your opponent to play any time in that week. It was fun and different than anything else going on.

So, what are your favorite formats? Individual, team, season-long or not, doesn't matter. Would love to hear some ideas.

I really enjoy match play, and team formats. Actually the best format I've every played was a team match play, where you played two individual matches in the foursome but then you also had a team match with the low net vs low net. I loved it, you could lose a hole yourself but still win the team match!

So, was your team just two of your vs. the other two, or was it your foursome vs. the other foursomes on the course?

Love that concept of playing individual and team matches at the same time.

Great question, it was actually an interclub match, so two from our course and two from another to make the foursome. So Player A/B were a team and Player C/D were the other team, but then A played C and B played D.

Awesome. Sounds like a fun format!

Red white and blue is a lot of fun. 6 holes of each from the various tee locations. The player has to determine which tee on each hole as long as they play 6 from each by the 18th. Adds another element of strategy to the game.

Each player can decide which tee on each hole? So all three tees could be in use on the same hole? I like it...

That's a really fun idea. It would be even more fun if each player got to choose the other players tee for each hole!

This year our association has held several different tournaments. Modified alternate shot (2 man teams), best ball 2 & 4 man teams, captains choice 2 & 4 man teams, a par 3 tournament where every hole plays as a par three, 5 club tourny, several gross and net individual tourny's, club match play tourny and we usually have a match play event once or twice a year with two other local courses. We hold at least one a month from Mar - Nov.

Yes. It definitely adds some strategy. There's 2 par 5 on my home course that were un reachable in 2 for me no matter what tees so those blues. Other players in my group went with red. You definitely need to plan before the start of the round.

I immediately began figuring which tees would be which at my home course. Lots of strategy!

I played in an interesting format earlier this summer. It was a "Flag Tournament". Each player's course handicap was used to figure their allotted strokes. (My course handicap was 10, par 72 course, so my stroke number was 82). Each participant had a flag with their name and strokes on it and wherever they were on the course when they hit their allotted stroke, they planted their flag. The furthest flag wins. A few guys made it beyond 18 holes and were on their 19th hole (hole #1 again), so you'd need to clear with the clubhouse that a few guys may play 1 or 2 extra holes if they are having a real good round.

That's a ton of fun, for me it would give me 90 strokes, on a good day I could get 18 in, otherwise on an average to off day I'd be done around 16-17!!!

That's definitely a fun one. If I get 75 shots, and my 75th is the approach to number 19, is closer to the pin better, or just further?

I played in a scramble event that was fun, but you have to have four people in a group to do it. You play with one person the first six holes, another the next six and the third person for the final six. That way everyone has their own score.
