@Mulligan9111 I think I will definitely work on my putting and 100 yards in, I need to get some consistency in that range definitely! I also know what you mean about being afraid to go low, I overthink when I am playing well and start defending my score as you say. I'll try to go low in my next qualifying round and let you know how I get on

@SharkHat Stats are definitely a great idea, I'll have to start logging my game to check up on my problem areas

I know I have but it's mostly of my own doing. I used to love to practice but a bad back broke me of the practicing habit. Even though I'm now healthy enough to practice most days, I always seem to find something else to do.

My index has been within 1.5 strokes of 6, + or -, for years.

Thanks for the link JN, lots of good stuff in there

Seems unanimous that the key is 100 yards, getting closer more consistently and converting GIRs to birdies! I'm looking forward to my next practice session so I can get to work on the short game, I have a few favorite drills I think I am going to get working on!

Has anyone else ever felt like they have hit 'the wall' ?
I have been playing golf since I was a little kid, going to the driving range with my dad and eventually joining my current club and getting a handicap in 2006. Since around mid 2007, I have struggled to get my handicap lower than 5, with my best ever being 4.8 and my current handicap being 5.0. I am aware that the fact that I have put my exams during school, college and now university before golf is a reason for this sticking but I now have some time to take off of work and no exams to worry about I am going to put some serious effort in!

I am determined to break my handicap wall this season and get to a 4, does anyone who has managed to get to the 0-4 range have any advice for going
lower?

Really focus on your game from 100 yards and in. Putting is one of the biggest parts of the game, yet most of the time I see people put the least amount of effort into it. And I think one of the biggest things is, don't be afraid to go low. One of my biggest problems is that I will get to 2-4 under during my round, and then do nothing but try to preserve that score, which actually gets me to make more mistakes. I've played some of my best golf when I have a buddy keeping score and telling him not to tell me where I'm at.

Those are just my suggestions. I wish you luck!

my wedge play from inside 100 yds is pretty crappy. practice your short game, wedge play and putting and you should see improvement.

dang it...i should take my own advice. I've been on the 6 handicap wall for years as well.

There's a huge thread somewhere in the forum with a ton of tips from our low handicap members about tips to get there. I am not going to spend the time to find it.

Get lessons from a pro
Read some mental books (Zen golf, golf is not a game of perfect)
Practice!

Using an app like GolfShot or keeping detailed statistics of your round could be beneficial. Either one would show you specifically what types of shots you might need to spend some more time practicing on.

Based on my experience the difference between a 5 and a 0 is proximity to the hole with irons and wedges. The 0s I have played with in the past have been able to drop shots consistently very close with anything smaller than about a 7 iron and within makeable birdie distance (inside 10 feet) with longer clubs. They make more birdies than I do because they have shorter birdie putts, fewer up and downs to contend with, and they are hitting 5 irons closer to the hole than I will hit an 8 or a 9 iron on an average day. On my best days from the fairway I will have maybe 7 or 8 makeable birdie putts but then I am missing the putts all day or I make only 1 or 2 of them. It is hard to get both going together in the same round and it is hard to go really low without making enough red numbers to counter the bogeys that most everybody will make during a round. I have been stuck at about 4-4.5 for a couple of years now myself. Iron play and putting are the real keys to scoring better once your ball is in play most of the time and I am working on both right now.
