But not hitting it hard enough guarantees yourself extra putts, but hitting it hard enough or a little too hard gives you a chance at a 1 putt.

I don't really think one is wrong or right. I've read some arguments on both sides. I think that choosing a strategy and being confident in it is probably the most important thing I guess. It's not that I putt to miss short. I just putt to get the ball right to the hole. If it's short or long, I misjudged, so I don't feel worse about one vs the other.
