Default 8.5 iron?
I have come to the realization that for some unknown reason, I have a huge gap between my 8 and 9 iron. I consistently hit my 9 iron around 130-135, and my 7 iron around 175-180. However, my 8 iron I hit around 155-160, and it is not uncommon to hit it 170 when I get ahold of it. I don't understand it. Every now and then I will hit every iron farther than I expected, and will overshoot the green. But it seems like it is more often then not with the 8 iron. I looked up the lofts and 7/8/9 is 33/37/41. I am just baffled by the distance I am consistently getting on my 8 iron.

I'm going to gps every shot with my short irons on my next round, and see what the numbers are saying.

Well, with what you have provided your gaps are pretty consistent with 20 yards between 7-8 and 8-9. What are your distances throughout the remainder of your set? At this rate, your 3 iron would be around 275 if your gaps stayed the same.

What exactly are you looking for? An iron that you can hit 145?

Did you have the lofts physically checked, or did you look up the specs fro your irons?

Yeah, a 30 yard gap between irons should not be happening. That's more than two clubs for a lot of people. You could always go have the loft on the 9 decreased a full club and see how that works.

I didn't have the lofts physically checked, I bought the irons new so I can't imagine they are very far off but who knows.

These are rough estimates, The only clubs I have actually measured recently is my 8. I don't find myself stuck on what club to use except in this situation. If I hit the ball well I tend to end up within 10 yards of where I expected, unless its my 9/8 iron.

PW:120
9:130
8:160
7:170
6:180
5:190
4:200his p
3:180-230 (hence the reason it pretty much has a permanent home in my bag, I love it for knock down shots, but thats about it. I am incredibly inconsistent with it on full swings)

Usually when I walk up to the ball I'm pretty sure I have the right club in my hand. At this point in that 145 range I just have to take some off my 8i, its just confusing to me why I'm seeing that big of a gap. My only guess is when I reworked my swing, I used my 8 iron almost exclusively until I was hitting it consistently, then transitioned to the rest of my clubs. I still use the same swing for the rest of my clubs, but maybe all that extra practice has payed off.

You would be suprised. Mistakes happen. I would have them physically checked a on a machine. On a recent set I played the 8i was a full 2.8* off.

That's tricky. Your best bet is to probably go into your local fitting shop and see what they have to say. Could be as simple as lengthening the club and taking out some of the loft to close the gap. Maybe add a little loft on your other irons, too if the gap persists.

I think I need my gaps checked also. Mine are not as far off as the op's but I have a good gap in my 6-5 irons. My 5i goes about 175-180 but my 6i goes about 155-160.

Even if there is a larger gap then normal, here's what I'd reccommend and also what I do. Find out your yardages with each club, really want to hone this in as close as you can. Then depending on the yardage, I either choose to open up the loft on the long iron and hit a slight fade, or deloft the short iron and hit a slight draw. That usually helps me get my yardages down pretty well.

I wouldnt get them checked. I would just get the 9i and pw strengthened.

In the case that the loft of your irons is actually not off, I'm going to go the issue actually being that your swing isn't consistent. Could be something like you being really confident with your 8i which helps you to create a better swing with it. Just a guess.

Or he could be struggling with the length of the shafts once he gets past a certain point.

I have heard of a 10 iron, as my grandfather has one (A lefty 10 Iron....would probably make TC faint from excitement!), but I don't know what to do here. Get the lofts checked as others have said.

You could be right. As in, anything shorter than his 8i is causing problems right? If that's the case, which it could be, then strengthening the lofts of the PW and 9i aren't a good fix...

The specs on clubs are usually +- 1* but that could be off on your set. As others have indicated I would get the lofts checked . If the specs are right on I would consider the length of the clubs as well. Also you might want to see if the shafts are spine aligned correctly also.

That is true, I never meant my ideas to be used together, just throwing them around.

The length on the irons being too short could be a big piece of the problem. I am fairly tall, and the irons are not fitted. I imagine I'm just going to deal with it for a couple more months, until I decide to put in the money for a full fitting and new irons.

I think the idea that I am putting a better swing into my 8i due to confidence holds some water as well. Like I said I hit hundreds of balls with my 8 when I was reworking my swing. I rarely mishit an 8, and I feel confident with it. This allowing me to put a better swing in is certainly possible.

How did this turn out for you? Is it different with the R11 irons?

Yep, gap is gone. I had the gaps checked in my 8 and 9 irons, and my 8 iron was bent 2 degrees strong. With the new irons my gaps seem to be even across my scoring irons.
