I know that a lot of you on here have played golf with fellow THPers, but I had my first experience with that today. I met up with Sean at Pinehills south of Boston today. It's a 36-hole facility that is one of the best public facilities in the state, and we chose to play the Nicklaus course. You can view some photos of the course on a normal day here: http://www.pinehillsgolf.com/index.p...us-course.html
The reason that I said "normal day" above is that we did not encounter a normal day weather-wise. It was overcast all day long, and the winds were a consistent 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph! Here's a picture of one of the flagsticks, and the picture doesn't capture how bad the wind was at times: ![]() Sean had the idea to play match play to start getting me ready for the Morgan Cup, so we had some fun with that. I played the 6600 yard tees and Sean played the 6100 yard tees. Luckily, my short game was working pretty well today and Sean didn't have his normal hot putter in the bag, so I was able to win 4 and 3. We both broke 90 for the entire round, which we both thought was pretty good considering all of the wind today. On a personal level, Sean could not have been easier to interact with, and he offered to host me at his club sometime in the future, which was very nice of him. It just goes to show you that we have some really good people that make up this forum. |

Arydolphin and I played 18 holes today at Pine Hills GC in Plymouth, MA. Ary is the consummate gentleman, great company, a very fine golfer, and handed me my hat 4 and 3.
We were under a wind advisory so it made the golf challenging. We both broke 90 on a challenging track that was virtually deserted. Pine Hills is rated a top 100 public course by Golf Digest so it was a bit eerie. We played the Nicklaus course. Ary hit some terrific shots and made a couple of up and downs that Phil Mickelson would envy. This was the first time I met a THP member and it was a great time. I look forward to a rematch very soon. :-) |

What made the round so challenging was club selection. We knew the yardage, but when the wind is howling it's very difficult. For example, I used an 8-iron from 100 yards to 145. It was a real guessing game. I nutted a SW from 65 yards it was headed right at the pin and ended up a good 40 feet left of the flag and off the green. And, it wasn't like you could play bump and runs...to many bunkers to clear. Many of the par 4's became par 5's because of the wind. It was a blast. lol
My hat kept blowing off my head. Ary's never moved. I think he must have stapled it to his head before the round... Ary was kind enough to pick up the round. :-) ps: Ary will make a GREAT Morgan Cup representative. |

Ad and Sean are going to think this kinda' funny but I was soooo happy with the weather today at least here in NH. Why you ask? Wasn't it overcast there as well? Well ya' but, it was almost 70 degrees today a full 20 degrees warmer than it has been and a bit over 25 degrees warmer than it has been any day I have been on a course this spring. My turn came back (I have been complaining constantly about my inability to turn in the cold) and I stopped screwing around with my swing trying to correct everything else (typical for me).
It is actually pretty amazing how much the trajectory of your shot and your distance is effected by not making a good hip turn both away and then back again. I am beginning to wonder if I should try to develop an early spring/winter swing that is as much as anything something to keep me from screwing around with the rest of my swing because I just can't turn in the cold anymore. In fact the longer I am out there the stiffer I get and the harder it is for me to turn. Then I start to worry that some other malady has leaked into my swing and then I am really in trouble. Just about the only other thing I started to screw up this spring was my right elbow. I started to let it fly a bit. Not sure how the heck I stumbled onto that one while not making a proper turn but I did. Anyway I was just happy to not be freezing my butt off out there. |

I won't be phased by wind at the Morgan Cup after going through today's round! |

Biggsy...sorry I didn't put more pressure on Ary. :-0 Hoosier...your are correct! |

Did you guys decide that was enough wind to try to keep the ball down or did you mainly decide to take your regular shot? I think we rarely see enough wind up here to make you want to change your shot. That flag looked pretty bent over though. |
