For starters, not sure if this can go here or in the Swing Tips area. Secondly, I could not find a specific thread discussing this but please merge if it exists.
Question: is your driver and iron swing the same? Reason I ask this is because my iron game has been great lately and my play off the tee has been so-so at best. I would like to get some help specifically focusing on the driver and when I called the local Edwin Watts today (because my parents purchased a 1 hour lesson as part of my birthday) the guy mentioned to just bring a 6 iron and a USB flash drive. I will take my driver anyways and tell him what I want to work on. So, how about you. Same swing? Completely different? |

I recently had this conversation with JB a little while ago in a different thread.
But here is my answer. My swing is different for my driver and my irons. From the take away to the finish position, they are mechanically speaking the same. However, my setup is different for each club. I consider the moment I address the ball, to be a part of the swing. Because my address and set up are different for woods and irons, I consider my swings to be different. |

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am definitely tracking in the majority here in that I hit down into my irons in an attempt to pinch/compress the ball at impact while using more of a sweeping motion with the driver.
This reiterates the fact that in my lesson I want to concentrate specifically on the driver and not just have him breaking down my 6 iron swing for an hour. |

Your swing should not change from one club to the next. You swing the driver the same as your 7 irons or sw. The difference is that the driver is longer so you stand farther away but the swing should be the same. If you sweep the irons you should sweep the driver . If you drive through the ball with the irons then the same should be done with the driver.
Inconstant driver play may be due to the alteration of your normal swing. I am speaking of full swings not half shots or finesse shots. But full swings. |

In theory... they have said for many years....the swings are supposed to be the same but that isn`t the whole story....Driver and iron swings feel different and most of us rely on feel in golf...The driver shaft lengths are much longer and have flatter planes compared to the more upright irons....the speed of the swing with the driver is slower and our posture is different...Jim

Mine are completely different. My driver swing is very flat and my iron swing is more upright. Perhaps I'm overthinking it though. |

I think my swings are a little different but I was just discussing this with my son this week because I think they need to be more alike. I'm too flat and inside with my driver compared to my irons and I'm working on that because my driver is off right now and my irons are great. It seems that one or the other is always off. Great thread!
