Indeed but some PGA pro's can't do both. I know the first pro I went to lessons for was amazing at the start because he corrected a lot of small things that added up to a huge difference. Once he did that though he had nowhere to go except to try and teach me to swing like him which simply wasn't going to happen.

I'm a huge fan of lessons but I agree with everyone that says talk to the different pro's to see what they're like. Not everyone can teach you what you need or what you think you need.
I just want to point out that 9 times out of 10, what we think we need as golfers is incorrect as well.

I personally think that people who wait a long time to take lessons are the ones who struggle with them the most.
I can agree with this, through my recent experience! I'm really struggling to find consistent ball striking at the moment, and I know it's because I've taken this lesson and tried to learn to correct some errors. Some hard headed people might blame the lesson for messing their game up, but I know it's me. I know I'm just struggling to keep one thought in my head and trust a new technique, and get it grooved into my swing. There are bad teachers, but there are more bad pupils!

It's weird. My impact and result is much worse than it was last year, but I feel nearer to getting it right. It feels like I'm close. I have no visual triggers to back up that thought. I have no reason to think so. But I do.

Ive heard so many horror stories of people who went for lessons and the pro tried to totally change their swing and it ended up messing them up so bad that they could barely even hit the ball.
That kind of spooked me. I can play bad golf on my own, I dont need some pro making me even worse.
Now Im kind of wondering if these people who had issues either didnt listen to what the pro was trying to teach them or didnt stick with it long enough for it to have a change to become natural and to work for them.
This pro was pretty good though. He explained the theory of the golf swing and then demonstrated it. He didnt tell us all these complex concepts, he kept it nice and simple.
He also explained to us what happens when we do something wrong so that we can kind of self-diagnose our swing and what to look out for if a certain ballflight happens.
you musta took lessons from my boss... thats his teaching style
im more of a visual guy and need to see my swing on vid
you can tell me what im doing but what i "think" im doing are 2 diff things until i see it for myself
thats why ill never leave my current coach... she's unbelievable and has a stable of incredible jr am's under her wing

Right there with you Bucky. I just started taking lessons as well (My first real lesson is the thread), and while it is not an instant fix, I can see where the path is going to take me. Stick with it.

I feel finding an instructor and method that you feel comfortable with and are willing to commit to is most important.

I've struggled with my short irons since my lessons, but I am crushing my long irons and driving much better than before. It is going to take practice and time to get the changes ingrained.

"it gets worse before it gets better"

100% true, btw. Sometimes it takes a while to unlearn something that has become habit. I find myself going back and correcting the same problems every so often as they like to creep back into my swing. Its like pruining a garden.

Totally agree, when I started taking some lessons again a few months ago to fix my driver swing, what I thought I was doing, and what I actually was doing were two very different things.

One good tip I have found usual, is keeping a progress report. Write down the good moments and reflect back on what you did right and how it felt. Keeping a diary on the good stuff ,reinforces your mind and ultimately your game improvement.

Definetly true. When I first started learning how to shift my weight during my swing I was hitting HORRIBLE shots but now that Ive worked with it more its gotten better.
Yesterday I was hitting some very nice shots: straight, good distance, piercing trajectory with a slight little fade. I'll take a little fade of the push shots that Ive been hitting!
Thats been after just 2 days. I cant wait to see how far my game can go after Ive been taking lessons for a while!
