Default Etiquette - who pays?
Hi All,

I guess I should already know this but... If I invite someone to play at my private club should I be picking up the tab? What about a foursome?

Thanks!!

Not for me. If you invite them to play, that gets them in the door to a club they could not normally play, but they have to pay their own way.

depends on how much money you have and whether or not I'm invited, hahaha.

Nah, they should pay, it's a privilege to play on a private course.

I would say generally each pays their own way, unless you're just going with your buddy who also has a private membership somewhere of equivalent value and you have a very reciprocal friendship.
That being said, depending on what the cost is, you have to make sure you only invite people who can actually afford it and it isn't going to blow their budget.

If I had the opportunity to play on a private course I would be more than willing to pay.

Depends on your relationship. If you're bringing clients they wouldn't expect to pay I wouldn't think. Family or friends I guess it's up to you. Several times a year I used to play a private club with my friend as a guest of his father. I always offered to pay, but never did. He always popped for the round.

Of course I would go in there with my low handicap, get on the greens that were like putting on glass, and he and his old buddies would basically empty my wallet. I also made sure I popped for a couple cocktails after the round. Always had a fantastic time. The course is so great. Lots of trees, brutal rough, and bunkers surrounded undulating greens that were perfect. I've never played greens anywhere better than those.

The fee for belonging to this place has dropped considerably over the last couple years, and if my daughter's swing coach didn't work out of a different club, I would maybe take the plunge.

Thanks folks! I have been a member of this club for a couple of years now and have mostly just treated some friends who I know reciprocate... I expect to play more golf than ever this summer but picking up the tab can get VERY expensive VERY quickly. I guess it's kind of like using the same rules you would when going out to dinner with folks.

It's up to you really and your partner, if you have the money and it's not an inconvenience I'm sure the invitee would appreciate it, but I definitely wouldn't be offended if you didn't pay. You're already giving him the chance to play a course he normally wouldn't.

A membership showed up in my company's classifieds for $33k... I think I'd rather spend the $100+ to play a round than foot the bill for that!

depends on the price. If it is expensive then I say you pick it up. I am sure if they had money to spend on a $100 round then they would be members as well. If its an affordable rate, then I am sure they would have no problem paying.

I'm not so sure about that one - I can afford a $100 round without thinking about it too much, but there's no way that I can afford a membership to a private club.

not all private clubs are 33k. but I see your point. I worked at one for years and more often than not the members paid if they were playing with them. if they were just getting them on then the guest paid

Most of the times I get invited I always offer to pay but they dont accept it. I usually bring the cigars even though they dont add up to what the round and drinks cost.

I agree. I play at my brother-in-law's club a couple of times a season, and I pay my own way. It's not actually any more expensove for a guest to play there than at any ot the upscale publice courses in the area.

I've always had the idea that the invitor is going to pick up the tab be it dinner, golf, etc.... If you invited me, I'd ask about paying my greenfee at the start. If you picked it up, I would want to invite you to play at the next opportunity on my dime. I know people who are members at different clubs and they do round swaps all the time. Guests rates at some privates are a good deal so either party can reciprocate pretty easily.
This all may go out the window depending on how much money is lost or won though.

When I belonged to a CC I always paid, thats kind of the point of inviting if you ask me. Would be really uncomfortable to stand there and ask for money after you invited someone. I always offer to pay for anything someone treats me to, but anytime I invited someone to anything I was planning on paying.
