Back in 1908, Amon Carter owned a newspaper called the Fort Worth Star, and it was struggling, and going under. He made the decision that year to buy out his competitor, the Fort Worth Telegram, and combined made what is known today as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a well respected paper.
He announced to the world (I'm paraphrasing) "we were struggling, so we decided to expand!" Well, I'm taking the same tack with my golf game. It stinks, it's embarrassing; so I decided to join a tour. ![]() It's little more than a beer league, but it puts me in a competitive environment, and forces me to play other players every 2 weeks. It's based here in the Dallas area, and is known as the Poor Man's Golf Tour. I'll be updating my performance against my fellow competitors in my blog here after each showing. We throw a few bucks in the pot every week, and the best performer (based on handicap) wins. We've got 4 majors and a match play event this season. It travels to affordable courses, and we play twilight rounds to keep cost down for everyone. This weekend is the first tournament, but I won't be able to play (I have to go out of town for a prior commitment). I've got between now and March 21 to pull together some resemblance of a golf game. |

Golf leagues are fun. I may join another one this year. Just don't do what did. I got so disgusted with the sand baggers, I stop going. Hopefully you won't have any of those critters in your league. They are easy to spot. 15 handicapper shooting 65, ending up with a score of 50....lol.

I'm with Prov on this one. Golf leagues are fun. Always figure there will be sandbagging, but you're not in it for the prizes anyway. Have fun. It will improve your concentration and your course management skills. Its hard to try to pull off the miracle shot with strangers watching and the potential effect on your scorecard. It always makes me a bit more conservative which translates to fewer big numbers.

Tonight we had our happy hour / meet-n-greet.
We had about 10 folks show up, and they all seem like pretty good guys. I don't think that sandbagging will be a big issue, at least not at the beginning, regardless of your current handicap, your tournament scores will determine a league handicap, so the potential sandbaggers will hopefully be found out pretty quickly. I'm excited about getting started. |
