Since I have now done this twice in the last two weeks ( and not proud of it) I will ask this question. What should be done if you hit a shot and it lands on the green on a different hole? I can't imagine you are supposed to play it from the green so what is the proper thing to do in this scenario?

Good question. When playing with buddies, I have always just moved the ball off the green "no closer to the hole I was playing" and hit again. I didnt think it was any different than hitting the wrong fairway. That is why I moved the ball so I would not hit off the green. Knowing the golf rules...I am sure there is a penalty in all of this somewhere.

I don't know the rule number off the top of my head, but I had this discussion with my pro (I was in a lesson and we saw it happen, except the green was a practice putting green) and free drop no nearer the hole is the relief.
I'll see if I can find the Rule. EDIT: Rule 25-3 25-3. Wrong Putting Green ![]() Interference by a wrong putting green occurs when a ball is on the wrong putting green. Interference to a player's stance or the area of his intended swing is not, of itself, interference under this Rule. ![]() If a player's ball lies on a wrong putting green, he must not play the ball as it lies. He must take relief, without penalty, as follows: The player must lift the ball and drop it within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green. When dropping the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the wrong putting green and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Rule. Penalty for Breach of Rule: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes. |

It is a pretty standard rule. Take free relief off the green, no closer to the hole you are actually playing. I don't believe there is a penalty involved at all.
You are on the golf course, and you don't want to destroy the course. I have played courses where this comes up from time to time. I would think in many cases it is more of a design flaw than a player flaw. |

In a casual round with your buddies, not such a big deal unless they are sticklers for the rules. In a competition, it can make a huge difference and cost you a 2 stroke penalty, or even disqualification, for playing from a wrong place. (see Rule 20-7) |

There is no doubt this sport can frustrate you GC heck it upsets the greatest in the world every weekend ( the networks dont show all the cursing but I am sure it is there). Set yourself little goals to accomplish instad of trying to tackle the beast that is the game of golf as a whole. Each little goal accomplished will get you to your bigger goal of getting a hold of the game.
You have seen me play GC, there are times I get very angry with myself and the game I am playing. I let the anger out ( cause it dos no good to keep it in) then go to the next shot. Onthe whole Ienjoy playing golf and I know in time I will get better. I know you will get better also in time. Just remember to always have fun and not get frustrated too much ![]() |
