Default Playing With Strangers
I played with a friend today. We were matched up with a man who was about 85 and a woman who was about 75. I thought they were a couple, but it turns out they're both married to other people and play golf together because their respective spouses don't play. After much debate - my friend and I decided they weren't having an affair. Anyway - I digress - sorry. They were without a doubt the best strangers I have every played with. The guy still had game and could putt better than half the golfers I know. The woman was good too. They got as excited as we did - I think it's contagious. I had a great time playing with them - wish it was that way all the time.

Sounds like fun! You get the geezers, I get the parent-child combos.

I don't mind the parent/child combos except when the parent is a "stage" parent on the course. I hate the ones that boss the kid around or make them feel bad - I've run into a couple of those.

I don't like the ones who try to keep track of my game. Don't care if they are young, old, or dead. Just worry about your own game & I will worry about mine.

After the twosome I got setup with a week or 2 ago, I hope to never play another rd with strangers ever again.

Glad you had fun with the "old geezers" Diane. LOL

When I was in college I met a stranger at Flanders GC in Morris County. He was 83 years old and could shoot his age! Carried his clubs too. Despite our age difference "Jigs" and I became pretty good friends, and I played golf with him all through college. It was a GREAT experience.

Sometimes good things happen when least expected.

I played with an older guy, I think he said he was 80, at a course a little west of Ft. Worth a few years ago. He was wearing jeans, a western shirt and a cowboy hat.

I thought uh oh, I' m in for a long day. It turns out he was a hell of a guy and a very good golfer. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

I have only had two bad experiences playing with strangers and that was a long time ago.

i was preparing to tee off when an older gentleman walked up and asked if he could join us. We said, "Sure." He carried and kept up. We always played pretty quickly. Somewhere during the round he mentioned that he played almost every day and I asked if he was retired. He said, "Twenty years now." The guy was 85, still carried his clubs, and could easily shoot his age. He was also a gentleman and a very pleasant companion.

Nice to know there's hope for us! And that down the road, some youngsters will be wondering if WE'RE having affairs.

In my hometown, the 87 yr old retired preacher married the 79 yr old retired schoolteacher. I just hope they use protection, wouldn't want her coming up pregnant.

Actually, I thought it was pretty cool. Love and the desire to have someone seems to never die away.

I've only played with one person that I didn't know who I could have done without. MO knows who that was! He was OK most of the time, but he kept pacing off my putts. Other than that, I've enjoyed the people I've been paired up with.

I tend to find the 60+ crowd to be the best strangers or playing partners I can be paired with if I'm not playing with someone or people that I know. Great perspective on things golf and non-golf related

I played yesterday with a guy and his two sons. They were just 10 and nearly 12 and I thought they were very well behaved for the most part. One thing the kids did was wander around the green completely oblivious to anyone else's ball. I didn't mind, but dad spent quite a lot of time trying to teach them to watch for other people's lines and not stand on them.

Fortunately (and I never thought I would say this) it was very slow, so there was plenty of time for the kids to play without us worrying about the groups behind, or losing our place on the course. Our tee time was 12:28 and I returned the cart at about 18:25. We were about 10 minutes late starting, so it only took 5 hours and 45 minutes to get round. But the weather was good and my golf (at least my long game) was not bad too, so I didn't mind at all.

Almost 6 hours - that's even worse than here. Where did you play Ty?

Definitely agree with that! I once played with an 80 year-old former teacher. Had some great tales about his older equipment, the course we played when it was new-ish 40 years ago, and some great teaching stories.

Ty, it's good to know the dad was trying. I see so many parents ignore course etiquette, and that's one thing we can teach without worrying about messing up their swing or something. Boo is required to pick up after three putts, and I'm a harridan about pace of play.

Is that a mother thing? Do you all get the same training? My mother is like that too.

Well, in general I'm forever nagging about looking out for the other guy and making life easier for him. This is part of it.

My poor kids are going to end up as Socialists.
