Well hell. Story of my life. A day late and a dollar short. You're right it is a big story.

its a pity.. id prefer it to be only the amateurs that get to play.
watching Woods, Harrington, Casey, Els etc battle it out, its just another competition really.. but as a means to watch amateurs, it would be fascinating getting to see the new talent on display.

eitherway, I like Golf being an olympic sport

I'd prefer only amateur as well - in ALL Olympic categories. I used to get into the Olympics until the pro's showed up to play basketball; after that I lost interest in it.

With the enormity of the golf industry, having the game become an Olympic event will only serve to create an even bigger marketing machine than that which already exists. I think it's a shame that something which once was a test of athleticism for the sake of athleticism has completely sold out to commercialism. Actually, this has created a sort of "underground" Olympics in that the more compelling event is seeing which corporate giant wins the fight for most air time.

Small consolation actually, but somewhat more compelling, I think, than watching the same pro's play the same game I can watch any week of the year.

My only question is why did it take so long? I mean golf has been around for 400 years and we are just now adding something that simply is played by more amateurs than any sport known to man? Funny stuff.

I wonder how much air time it will get. It may be like sailing and cross country skiing where they report the results and show a few clips rather than the actual event.

If Tiger or any other big names at the time are in it, I would expect a lot of coverage.

I agree though the Olympics should be amateur as well. We have more than enough events with pro's already.

Ah, but pros draw fans, ratings, and ad dollars. Who would watch Olympic tennis if it were a bunch of no names? Golf is just the same.

I guess I'm the only one who is not the least bit excited about this.

I would be more excited if it was amateurs and a team sport though. And match play. Mainly because very few amateur events get televised and this would be an opportunity to see amateurs. But as for the fact that golf is in the Olympics, it just doesn't do anything for me.

Heard today that they have exactly two golf courses in the entire city and both are crappy by PGA standards. Either they will have to build one or the first year they will play putt putt golf in Rio.

We were talking about this yesterday, and "jokingly" the subject of "appearance fees" came up.

I would.

In fact, one of the reasons why I don't care much for the AT&T as much as I used to is that in the last several years the amateurs have all but disappeared in terms of coverage. I liked it when they used to pay attention to them because it had a more "I-can-relate-to-that" feel to it.

In the Olympics, I loved it when it was all amateur but as I wrote, they completely lost me as a viewer once we caved in to the almighty dollar and agreed to play pros.

I can watch pro sports anytime, but amateurs are never seen on television except in rare instances and frankly, I think that stinks. I honestly couldn't care less about watching Tiger and the rest of the usual suspects playing golf in the Olympics.

So maybe "pros draw fans" in your world, but not in mine; quite the contrary, actually.
