Default Big Break
Ever bend your shaft by hitting an immovable object? Ever have your clubhead come flying off? Ever snap your club over your knee? Ever thrown a club and broken it? Ever run over a club?

You guessed it! Have you ever broken a club? Please describe the circumstance(s) and outcome.

Nope.... never. I've hit roots and rocks, I've hit from cart paths and roads, I've hit from behind and under trees where I've hit the trunk or branch on the follow through, but I've never, ever broken a club. Gotten a few dings... but they don't affect playability.

And certainly never damaged a club in anger... that's just dumb.

I have a very small car and I have to take my driver and 3 wood out to fit the bag in the trunk. I put my 3 wood in the bag and set my driver inside with the handle sticking out to grab Fooldog's headcover that he left in my car. I put it on my bag and absentmindedly shut the trunk. It sounded funny and when I glanced, I saw the handle of my driver sticking out the right side. To make it worse, it actually caught and latched a little. So, not only did it hit the shaft, but it was also holding pressure on it. It somehow did not break the shaft. That very day I hit the longest drive I have ever hit. I figured that my shaft was also not affected. God likes me.

Car door (PW), and an over hanging limb (5i), about 6 months apart. Called my vendor, explained the issues. Received an RA#, and had replacements in 10 days. ( I wanted the same factory shafts I had on the rest of my clubs) Total cost was $12 for both clubs. I have damaged other clubs of various brands, and just tossed them. All my clubs have a few dings in them from little rocks, and other rough lies. I had a cheap, after market driver with a Harrison shaft that was pure money when it cam to hitting long, and landing in fairways. After about a year's use the face caved in.

I had an odyssey white hot #1 putter shaft get bent from someone throwing their bag on top of mine about 10 years ago and I had a cleveland sand wedge shaft get bent much the same way. Since then I don't allow anyone to put my bags or another set of clubs in a car without me paying attention to it. The bent putter was practically brand new. I have never broken a club out of anger, if I get that mad I just punch my playing partners or hit them with the ball.

I've had an iron head come unglued and fly off during a swing at the range. It must have flew about 40-50 yards. I had to have the range make an announcement having all golfers stop hitting balls while I ran out to retrieve it. Somewhat embarrassing.

I've also swung and damaged clubheads by hitting rocks and stumps.

I agree with 4putt, damaging a club in anger is just dumb.

I was hitting range balls with a graphite shaft hybrid last summer and the shaft snapped off at the hosel, the head was hanging by a thread. Never broke one in anger, never hit a rock or a root with one. Hit a tree trunk once with an iron shot I tried to hit from a lie right next to a tree and it shattered the steel shaft, now I always just take an unplayable next to a tree unless I can hit it left handed or avoid hitting the tree no matter what. Had a putter shaft bend one time just leaning on it a little waiting to putt, don't do that any more.

Had a shaft snap at the hosel on a driving iron about 6 years ago on a tee shot in the Saratoga area, a short par 4.

As teenager I missed a short putt in a high school tournament and after the round I threw the ball up and baseballed it. Normally that would be a whiff but somehow I smacked it flush. The clubface was so thin it partially caved in. But I still have that putter in my closet.

My Hogan Apex Grind 7 iron has a bent shaft, actually very well bent, about halfway up. I have no idea how I accomplished that, or when, but I'm confident it was an end over end sling. I had no idea until I was standing over a par 3 tee shot and my brother-in-law pointed it out.

Had the head of my 3w fall off while I was walking down the fairway, hadn't even used the club which was the weird part. Course it was just a crappy Acuity & I expected something like that to happen.

snapped the shaft on my 5 wood trying to get home in 2 on a short par5. I made great contact (ended up just short of the green) but on my follow thru the shaft snapped in 2.

Dent - How hard were you swinging? Or was it just the angle?

I swung really really hard actually. I just wanted to hammer that ball out, it was literally rested right against this little wall. A bit uphill as well.

The only club I've ever broken was a TM 360ti driver on a tee shot about four years ago. It was probably because it was so old, but those bubble shafts are really stout (.410" tip IIRC). It broke just above the ferrule and flew 50 yards straight down fairway.
