Default Selective Memory
I can remember just about every one of my "great" shots going back 30 years. But even though the depth of some of my horrendous shots was greater than the height of some of my great shots I can't (or probably choose not to) remember them.

In fact, IMO golf probably owes "selective memory" for it's skyrocketting popularity.......it's the memory of good shots that keeps us coming back.

Do you share this inability to remember the "stinkers" or are they as vivid in your mind as the great shots?

I call it the "second child syndrome". Same brain trick that causes women to have a second child after the first labor....bad memories fade twice as fast as good memories.

One very good analogy.

Dating back long ago, I won't remember shots that I've stuck close to the pin, but rather lucky shots and absolutely rediculous shots where I had to hit it under a tree, then hard slice it around another one from 160 out to 4 feet. Those kind always stick in my mind.

Don't forget selected sight as well.

I definetly dont forget the bad shots. I simply dont worry about them and dont allow a couple bad shots fill my head with a million swing thought and totally mess me up.

My memory is definitely selective. I remember the good shots (the shots that make me come back....) in great detail, all they way back to when I started practicing and playing. The bad shots, not so much!

If it were the other way around, I probably wouldn't be playing golf anymore!

OMG! My wife says she doesn't understand how I can NOT see all the stuff in my bedroom floor. I am going to show her this as proof it is gender based and therefore is not my fault.

I remember individual shots right down to the place, the hole, the weather, everything, have hit more of them lately so I don't remember them anymore unless they are really good. I remember driving the green at par 4 #7 Tenison Highlands last week for example.

Regarding perception many people are of the opinion that everyone sees a different reality because reality is projected outward somewhat by your own mind, depending on expectations and experiences or habits. In effect we are creating our own reality 'movie' in our minds as we filter input through our eyes and we spend some significant effort in conforming that 'reality' to fit the perception we want, or need, to see. We see what we want to see, need to see, or think we remember seeing, not what is actually there or what has actually happened. This is why your teenager might say "I didn't know it was broken" or dented or whatever when you ask about why there is a broken lamp in the living room or why the car has a big dent on the front end.

That's a very insightful take on things.

It's also the reason why most cops will tell you that the worst witness is an eye witness.

Great observations, pjcedog!

I really don't recall a whole lot of shots, bad or good. Some people can recite every single shot they played for the last 10 rds. I'm lucky if I can remember which courses I played much less individual shots.

It's just a matter of time before you're wandering the course aimlessly wondering who you are - isn't it Dyna?

I do that now. I think it's rather a nice break in the day, actually.

I tend to not think much on past games. Just the next one. Like the one tomorrow. I can't think of anything else.
