JB's post got me thinking about playing golf with family. I know a few of you have mentioned playing with your spouses or kids too. I play a bit with both my parents and my brother. I don't mind them separately, but am not fond of playing with the three of them together. What family members do you play with and do you enjoy it? Is there a rivalry or is it just for fun?

My brother-in-law and I have been playing together for 35 years. Bigtime rivalry. But we enjoy the game the most when we find a couple of guys who want to play for money. Playing 5 bucks a hole (double on birdies) just makes it all the more fun for us. But if it's just the two of us the conversation goes on.......but neither of us hears one another because we are both so intent on beating one another.

I really enjoyed playing with my son as a kid, but he put his clubs away. At 29 I'm guessing he'll get back to it one day. He was quite the player at 16. |

I like to play with my son in laws. Actually I like to beat up on them playing golf. One is a club thrower, or was, the other is just a lousy golfer even though he has an aunt who is a retired LPGA pro. Both my daughters play well enough to have a fun few hours. I have a grandson who can hit the ball a mile, shoots in the high 80s who just likes to just hang out with me at the golf course. It's the only time he plays golf. Football is his first sport. I also have a grand daughter who loves the game, and is learning to play better every month. My wife, for the most part plays "one club golf", which means she only uses a putter. Her deal is to make par or better just putting on every hole when we play together. She starts putting from the farthest point on the green from the flag. I still have to play from the tee boxes during our competitions. All a very fun to play with for different reasons. Now my daughters do not golf with their husbands. Why, I don't know. Would I ever golf with all of them at one time? Sure if I could them all to agree to it

I play with my father-in-law and/or my sons a few times a year. FIL loves to play, and has a great short game. His driving, FW and long iron/hybrid play has left him, so he scrambles a lot. Our scores are about even.
I play with my sons on occasion. They don't mind playing, but as teenagers, they'd rather hang out with friends during the weekend. Besides, their favorite sports to play are football and lacrosse, of which they're both good at, so they don't see how golf ties into either of those sports in regards to skills development. I play with my brother-in-laws when we have family gatherings. The one from Colorado is a pretty good player and hits the ball a mile. He's pretty competitive and always shoots lower than I do - and lets me know it. The other, in So Cal, is about my skill level and is pretty laid back. All of us played 9 holes last month on a course in Harbor City. My oldest son passed, but my nephew, who's new to the game, joined us. Decent course and we had a great time. As usual, my BIL from Colorado beat me, but only by a couple of strokes. I attributed it to the rented clubs. ![]() |

I play almost exclusively with my Wife and twelve year old Daughter. I have watched my Daughter go from shooting 115 to 125 last year to less than 100 several times this summer including a 90 and 93 two weekends ago. This while working on a pretty ambitious swing her coach is teaching her. A swing along the lines of Stricker's.
I enjoy playing them a lot, though I am playing with just my buddy this coming Saturday, and am really looking forward to taking some of his money, teasing him (and him teasing me), and just relaxing. My little girl really stresses herself on occasion which stresses me at the same time. No matter how hard I try to tell her she is just learning and she should savor the good shots, she wants every shot to be good, and can go from having a great time to thinking a round is ruined with just a couple bad shots. I could tell she was getting burned out, and she asked to take a week or two off and I am glad she did, as I was going to suggest it. As an indication how hard she has worked this summer, she has pretty much worn out the grips on most of the R7s irons I bought her at the end of June. She's a cool kid, but just wants to be good so badly, that it takes the fun out of it for her sometimes. Kevin |

I guess I've played the most of my golf since 1992 or so with my ex BIL, in fact we have gotten together once this year and once last year after not playing since 2000. Back in the 90s though we'd play every time we went to our wives parents farm (which seemed like it was once or twice a month!) and whenever the sisters would visit each other, here or in Iowa.

For a while the only person I would play golf with was my grandpa. It was always fun when we played. We'd talk crap to eachother and then he would proceed to beat me. Due to some health problems he hasn't played any this year. I also enjoy playing with my brother. A couple of my favorite rounds he has been involved in.
