Ever pull or push one into someone's yard...or worse? (Broken a window, ball through a screen, in their pool, hit a car parked in their driveway etc?) IMO it's very embarassing to have to go pick up your ball....damage or not. So here are a few questions for you....
1) Have you ever done any damage to someone's home? 2) Has anyone ever come out of their house to scold you? 3) Whose responsibility is it to pay for any damage? (Someone told me that it's at the homeowner's risk and therefore his/her responsibility) C'mon lemme hear some stories. I don't think I'm alone in "trespassing to retrieve a ball." AND YES, I put a ball through a screened in pool area. The ball ended up in the pool. Their was no activity around the house and I left the ball where it was. SHOULD I HAVE LEFT A NOTE? |

IMO it's very embarassing to have to go pick up your ball....damage or not. So here are a few questions for you.... My Best Story: There were 3 old men sitting on a deck watching people golf. I attemped to hit the green in 2 with my 3 wood. I hit it but it sliced into the yards. When I got up t here I saw a ball on the green. The old men were laughing. Apparently, I hit the foundation of the deck they were sitting on and ricocheted my ball onto the green. |

I've been fortunate enough to have never done damage to anyone's home or property. I think about the worst I've done was bounced a few off roofs. *knocks on wood*
I haven't had anyone come out to scold me, and have picked up numerous balls from yards along the course after putting them there. ![]() I'm not sure who's responsible - I've read that it's the homeowner or the course in the past, but not sure if either of those answers are the correct one. I do know that if I lived along a fairway I'd be sure to put up some netting or have a form of lexan in the windows facing the course. |

I've retrieved many a ball from someone's yard.
I've hit several rooftops. I've yet to break a window. There's a relatively busy stretch of road alongside the left side of a straight par 4 at one of my regular courses. I have sliced more balls off the tee into that road than I can count (it's a slice -- I'm a lefty). Probably 10 at least. So far as I know, I haven't hit a car yet. ![]() ![]() |

I have a friend who lives on a course and I played with him last week and I asked him some of these same questions. He lives about 230 down the left side on the first hole. 75 yards from the fairway and about 20 left of the OB stakes. So to get to his house is a big time hook, but pretty doable since the hole is a dogleg left and many try and cut the corner. The course isn't really a golf community per se, just a golf course and a few houses here and there. Here is what he told me.
Someone broke a window and it is all his responsibility. His insurance told him that when they built. If you want to live on a golf course, you assume that risk and responsibility. However I have heard of some golf communities where the HOA or the course will pay for damages to a home, but I don't know that to be fact. As far as trespassing, he doesn't mind people walking in the yard to look for a ball. His big thing was to stay in the yard. It is still someone's home, don't go poking around. Don't go all the way up on the porch. He said one day they looked out the backdoor and there is a guy on the porch moving stuff around looking for a ball. And don't drive the cart in the yard. Park it at the OB and walk around. Just my own personal rule, don't jump a fence into a yard. If there isn't a fence, to walk around a little and look is fine. |

I have been fortunate not to hit someone's house or put it in the pool, etc. I have witnessed it several times. I have hit into someone's yard many times. If it is easy and accessible without disturbing the residents, I will go retreive it.
In Hot Springs Village, on the Isabella course, there is a house about 220-280 off the tee on the right hand side. The yard is all gravel - low maintenance for the retirees who live there. Evidently this guy got tired of people looking for balls in his yard, so he dumped hundreds of used balls all over his gravel back yard so it would take you a week picking up balls and inspecting them to find yours. That stopped anyone from coming into his yard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A friend of mine pull-hooked his drive into some condos that sat right up against the golf course. These condos were stucco and had lots of pock marks from previous ball strikes. My friend's ball sounded like an explosion when it hit the side of the condo and an old man came out to complain and told my friend he was going to have to pay for the damage. We told him if he could pick out the specific hole that was ours, we would gladly come over and stucco it ourselves. He gave up and went back inside. His neighbor who witnessed this all from his patio commented that the guy was an A** and he gave everyone a hard time. What makes people like that? Didn't their Mother hug them enough or something? Surely by the time your 80 you would get over it. |

I hit a ball into someone's open trunk. She was putting her clubs in, but luckily I didn't hit her or break anything on the car. I was playing at a friend's club and hit the clubhouse - again nothing broke. I'm usually fairly straight, but both of these were on par 3's when I hit over the green. |

As I understand it when a person purchases a home on a golf course, they are taking responsability for any damage done. If you have been watching TGC , Kevin Sorbo, and who ever the pro is he is playing with, those home owners had to sign a an agreement that they could not hold the golfers, or the golf course responsible for any damages.
There is a case going through some court that the only time a player is responsible is if they do damage when taking a "mulligan". There is thread on here some where that tells about that case. I have landed numerous balls is peoples back yards with out doing any damage. There are quite a few homes on my home course that look like they have been hit by a machine gun with all the ball marks in the stucco finish. . Personally I think that if a golfer does damage to a home, they should offer to pay for said damage. Unless of course the home owner becomes an irate idiot at which point, you tell them to pack sand |

We have the same signs on our course, and they don't mean squat, unless it is an unusual circumstance. My wife's cousin lives on the 4th fairway of my home course. Their home is 230 yards off the black tees. Their home gets hit a lot by hooked shots. They, as home owners have to pay for any repairs needed, and the course management will not help them with errant golf shots. One nice thing is that these folks don't golf, so I have an endless supply of practice balls.

My home course starts with a par 5 about 440 yards the hole dog legs left, with a house right at the dog leg. After a fair drive then no fade on my second shot, well you know the rest.I've hit this house so many times that me and home owner have become good friends. They are super good people always saying, that's the hazard of buying on the golf coarse.

I've hit my ball into the backyard of the house on #13 at Shirkeys more times than I can count, it's a par 3 with a lake in front of the green, bunker to the left and the house to the left. I often pull my tee shot into their yard and have to hop the OB fence that the course installed. I've never seen anybody at home and the house sits far enough back that I haven't been able to reach it.

I'll probably be there next time MO. I was ALMOST there the last time but was able to take a 1/8 swing at the ball which was just in bounds! And I made decent contact. I think I still took a 6! At least I wasn't in the pond twice like the first time!
BOT: I have hit many balls into peoples backyards. Retrieved every one I could find. |

I have been scolded once. I hit my second shot on the par 5 15th hole. I hit a 5 iron just trying to get past a line of trees which would leave a PW to the green. I hammered that 5, flew the fairway and the ball sailed into a fenced back yard. I walked up to see where the ball went and the homeowner started yelling at me. It seems I nailed the family dog pretty good. I felt bad but what could I do? I said sorry and went my way.

There is a course I play once or twice a year that has a house that sticks out into the fairway in front of the tee box on a par 5. It was the first full size course that I had ever played and I proceeded to slice one right into the siding. I heard a yelp and the owner had been sitting on her patio. I apologized and she said "no worry, happens all of the time". She was sitting in front of a massive picture window that I had fortunately missed.
