Was going over my stats and noticed a similarity. What I noticed was when the slope and rating were higher,I played better.Sometimes,I've felt the rating was too high for that course cause it didn't seem that hard.
Some of these courses had such a high rating ,but felt didn't seem as hard as it's rated.Because of some of these courses,I can see why some would have a lower handicap cause of it. Do any of you have a course that is rated high, but doesn't seem to play that hard? Do you play better on harder courses or on the lower rated course? |

It usually works about the way it's supposed to with me. Usually the course with the higher ratings play harder for me. There are a few that shouldn't play hard and their slope rating confirms this; that are a bear to me.
The thing that hampers me most on a course is what kind of rough do they have and what kind of height it is. |

Being scratch, you shouldn't be effected by the slope (us hicaps will), so the only difference you'll feel is the rating. (sigh, nice place to be!) |

I think it depends on WHY a course has a higher slope & rating. If it's just for narrow fairways and trees, not that big a deal. I posted about this last night. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...0&postcount=14
Okay--I just checked. The course I think is easier is 74/134, and the one I think is harder is 73.2/128. That's practically a rounding error, but I still think the second one is much harder for my game. |

Course ratings used to be strictly tied to their length. Other factors are considered now, but it's still pretty much an indicator of length. Slope is where degree of difficulty comes in. If the high slope is due to it being tight and having quick greens and you hit it straight and like fast greens it may not hurt you as much. It all depends on why it's considered tough and how you handle those particular obstacles.

I have always been the same way. The harder the course the better I seem to play. Not necessarily score better, but play better. In my experience the higher rated courses are usually just better courses. IMO it is easier to play better on better courses. Better fairways, greens, tee boxes, etc. It is easier to play when you have good lies in the fairway, and the greens roll true. The 5500 yard goat track of a course barley has grass on the greens and you're lucky to find grass in the fairway even if you are playing the ball up. Much easier to play on the good courses, which are usually higher rated.

What's the highest slope rating you played? When I played Pine Valley it was brutally tough. Par 70, rating/slope 72.7/153 from the reg tees. Back tees are 75.2/155. Definitely a difference from the normal courses I play in the 120's. 74.1/136 75.4/136 73/138 73/130 I feel this is rated to high 74.4/149 this is tough but can be tamed.I hate the layout though 72.4/141 71.5/137 73.6/143 75.6/147 73.9/135 I feel this one harder then rated. 72/135 72.3/146 72.1/147 75.1/142 tough 76.6/144 tough but fair. 76.5/141 Harder for me then last one. 74/138 plays harder then last two.For me anyway. 72.2/146 |
