Default To Yell Or Not To Yell
I was playing the other day and we were almost hit by a guy's tee shot from the adjacent hole. The guy did not yell Fore, but he could not see us from the tee. I said that he should have yelled regardless, but my brother disagred. His point was why yell if you don't see anyone since it may disturb someone who is putting. I pointed out that people were putting all over so that was silly and even though you couldn't see us, the chances were high someone was there. Anyway - do you think you should yell Fore if your ball is going on to another hole even if you can't see anyway for one reason or another?

Have to agree with your brother on this one. I know players who would be yelling after almost every shot. On some days that would be me.

Like anything else, when it occurs too often, you start to ignore it. That's when somebody gets hurt.

If you know that it's likely there are players in the area of your shot, then sure yell out.

Yell fore. You don't do it because someone is there. You do it because someone might be there.

We're not playing for the Masters' title. Safety is more important than someone's putt. (Besides, the pros yell fore and they ARE playing for the Masters' title.)

A few months ago, I was on the 16th tee and trees blocked the view of the 15th fairway from us. No one had been behind us for the last few holes. I hooked my tee shot through the trees toward 15 fairway. Since no one had been behind us, none of us yelled. As the last guy in our group teed in up, a gorilla came riding up in a cart with his girl and started complaining that we had hit the top of his cart and no one had yelled. I apologized and explained that no one had been behind us and we were sorry. We would have yelled if we thought anyone was there. That didn't satisfy him as he was really more interested in showing how tough he was for his girlfriend. I apologized several more times while he kept mouthing. He finally called me a dirty name and I told him that if he did not want to be embarrassed having his girlfriend watch an old man whip his a**, then he had better move on. He evidently believed correctly that I was serious and departed.

I know we should have yelled, but still, I apologized all I was going to. No one was hurt and enough was enough.

Some people thrive on drama. They love it. I hate it. If your balls in the bushes some one in the group should stay visible to the tee box. You can leave the cart and walk to the bushes. Same thing happened Saturday to our group. All day no one was in front of us and no one in back. This guy in the group hits the tee shot and it slices into the trees. Some guy comes out of bushes and starts screaming at us. The way I see it they must have lost a ball and were looking for it for at least 20 minutes. There was just 2 of them to our 4. None of us saw them.

I honestly think it is only effective if the person you are yelling at can see you and you can point in the direction the ball is traveling. If I hear a yell from some distant place, I will probably just stand still. My luck would be to duck right into the ball.

Hearing fore doesn't put a helmet on you. I always found it silly. Come to think of it I can't remember the last time I yelled fore because something I did.

Amazing what hitting a straight ball can do for you.

I was hit once by a guy who didn't yell Fore. In hindsight - it was a good thing because I would have turned around if he had yelled and it would have hurt more.

If you hit into someone you have to yell. while it may still turn out bad it's the only chance you can give them to get low and cover up their head with their arms. I like most play the odds that it's not going to hit me and just freeze and hope which would indicate that MY head is not that vital of an area. I'm going to think about this some more....

When I hear someone yell, I turn away, duck and cover my head. Why on Earth would you turn toward the sound????

If my ball is carving off the fairway (regular occurence these days...) I'll consider the situation first:
Can I see the predicted landing area?
If no, then shout [Mitigating circumstances: the predicted landing area is not a place where a golfer is likely to be ie: adjacent fairway vs. woods]
If I can see the landing area then, Is the predicted landing area well cleared?
If yes, no shout. If not, then shout.

(Besides, the pros yell fore and they ARE playing for the Masters' title.)
I haven't seen a pro shout fore in a long time, usually they just sulk, slam their club on the ground and let their caddies do it for them. Sometimes they half heartedly stick an arm out.

You definitely yell!

I was playing with a guy during his first time on a course a few weeks ago. He has the typical beginning swing where he hooks it into the next fairway. Now this was my first time playing this course so when he would hit it out of our sight I would yell fore just in case, not knowing what was over there! (New guy, was too embarrassed to yell) We went looking for one of the balls and found it on the tee box of another hole. There was a foursome teeing off and we almost hit one of them, but they went running for cover when they heard me yell. Close call, just err of the side of caution and yell.

I have to admit that I usually don't yell under the circumstances you describe Diane. But I agree with you. We should yell if we can't see where our ball is going to come down. Better safe than sorry...so someone is disturbed when putting. They'll get over it. And really Fourputt how often does this happen in your average round ?

It needed to be asked.
