I used to do interval training and yes, it does seem to really rev-up your metabolism, lately I've been sticking to steady pace 5mph walks because I actually need to slow down my weight loss, or negate it completely. I'm wanting to burn the FAT, not just lose weight indiscrimantely.

Default HIIT and Atkins
Has anyone here tried doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in the beginning stages of Atkins? HIIT is suppose to burn more calories than non-interval, study training, due to the fact that it keeps your metabolism raised higher throughout the day (while not working out).

Just wondering what anyone else that knows about HIIT thinks of this?

ps. I lot of bodybuilders use HIIT in their "cutting" phase, to get lean.

There are a couple of studies done on HIIT vs. "Slow go". In particular, the ones I remember are from Washington U. I think. Later on in the day, when I have more time, I will try to find some links and post them.

EDIT: OK, here are some sites:

http://www.wsu.edu/~strength/hiit.htm (Washington State University Study)

http://www.musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp (training regime)

You can come to your own conclusion and maybe check it out in more depth if you are interested.

The only problem with this form of exercise is that it is more geared toward people who are already doing at least a moderate amount of activity because it requires a certainly level of endurance. So if you are one of the 100+ to lose people, this is probably not for you.

I know that interval training is good for building your endurance, but I never heard that it helps you burn more calories throughout the day. My understanding was that cardio burns calories while you are working out, and strength training builds muscles that burn calories throughout the day. Maybe interval training builds muscles (vs. straight cardio)?
