If this helps.... good
i started Atkins on Tuesday, and I started working out (cardio only) for 30 mins (intense cardio) twice a day 3 days a week, and once a day 6 days a week last thursday. Anyway, as I have only been on Atkins 3 (this is day four) days I have already lost 4 lbs! So, I think you will probably be ok. Also, in the long run, its better because you are turning fat into muscle which looks sleeker and slimmer anyway!!! |

It will speed up your weight loss. The only way it will counter-act it is if you weight train and gain muscle. Muscles weighs more than fat, but is smaller.
If you gain 5 pounds of muscle and lose 5 pounds of fat, you will weigh the same, but be thinner and firmer - which is what you want. As an added plus, that 5 pounds of muscle will burn an additional 200 calories per day (40 calories per pound of muscle), without you doing anything at all. Cardio will strengthen your heart and burn fat. |

First off, muscle does not burn 40 calories a day...I don't mean to step on toes (PattyC
![]() What happens working out is exactly what everyone says...you're all so smart! You either stay the same weight or even gain a pound or two but guaranteed that you look a lot better since your intestines and everything else is being held in a lot tighter to your body. The problem with being a little overweight and building muscle is that you build muscle and then can't see it because it's covered in fat. You still have to get rid of the fat you have to be able to see those gorgeous legs and arms or that "six pack." Which is solved by lots of fast (very fast) paced walking or cardio working. The other thing is muscle is made from protein. However, if you already have fat it will replace this fat with muscle, so if you try to bodybuild and haven't lost enough "fat" you could possibly build more muscle than you would like to have. If that makes any sense... again, or so i've been told... -mildwild there's this cool pic of 5lbs of fat versus 5lbs of muscle on the low carber forum...it's interesting to see how much smaller the muscle is... i think i write too much :P |

Muscle has less mass than fat. You will look even slimmer if you exchange muscle for fat. Do not hesitate to get started at it. Even if you do not lose net weight for a while, your body shape will change dramatically as you lose the fat. And exercise will probably do more for you in losing fat than any other aspect of Atkins. If you have any significant problems, be sure to get your doctors permission as to what kind of exercises you should do.
Good Luck! ![]() |
