I went to my local Roller Girl shop (yes, there actually is a shop downtown devoted to Roller Derby) and bought the best skates I could afford. Riedell "Wicked", the most expensive footwear I have ever bought in my life, are comfortable and cool looking and I broke them in last night at Skateworld.
Roller Skaters are a whole other subculture than the mainstream. There were all ages and skill levels at the rink last night and I was observing that the best skaters were very confident and mostly kept to themselves while they were in their own beautiful world as they moved with the music. I was mainly working on my crossovers and feeling balance. I did not fall once but felt some strain in the front of my shins, hope that doesn't mean shin splints in the future. I skated for 2 hours and got all sweaty so I'm sure it's a great workout. Got on the scale this morning and lost another lb! |

Well, it had to happen.
Due to my attraction to all things absurd I happened upon a group of gals at the fitness center who were training for Roller Derby. I never knew (but should have known) that there were actual teams here in my own town of Springfield Oregon. It figures that my town, known as "Springtucky" by more urbane locals, would be the center for such a silly sport. God help me, I'm going to try out! Pray for me... |

LOL - that's awesome! For added inspiration, go to youtube (or google) Madonna's song (v i d e o) for "Sorry". Its roller derby inspired. 8)
Heres it is, skip to 3:40 in the song for full effect! WOW. Good luck at the tryouts! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOU0HCn5hUY |
