Default I'm going to take up Judo
Once I start my job and can afford gym memberships I think I'm going to start practicing Judo, anyone here have any experience with it?

You really take the good decision to join the judo. By playing the judo you can also fulfill your hobby and also use it as workout to lose the weight and maintain the health.

maybe im not ready this correctly...but i cant see anyone "playing at judo", thats insulting to the memory of Master Jigoro Kano.
yes the benefits of judo are numerous, especially when combined with multiple forms/styles of martial arts.
everyone can benefit from the tuneing of physical coordination, power, flexibility, body control, balance, and fast reflexive action.
Skill, technique and timing, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo

but the next week the fortune cookie said something completely different

I checked into the place here and I'm a bit disappointed, they only do classes twice a week, and each class is about an hour long, I was expecting it to be a more serious place but it seems it's more for people who train as a hobby, I was hoping to do some serious competition.

That's more Jiu-Jitsu, there is some of that in Judo but what appeals to me is the clinching aspect of it, the trips, drags, and throws they use to get it to the ground are absolutely beautiful.
