Is your primary care physician prescribing them, or a psychiatrist? There is a difference. It sounds like a GB is prescribing. Find out what you need to do to get your insurance to cover mental health treatment. Sounds like therapy would be good for you.
Anti-depressants are effective, but like anything else, there has to be more than just popping pills. Acute depression is simple, you have bad things happen and you feel down about it. SSRI's can help you bridge while you heal

Cronic depression is more insidious. You can be depressed and nobody will know. You develop coping mechanisms that cover up deeper emotions. People who seems the happiest can be using it to cover the sadness inside. For me, it was a life long battle of never enjoying anything. There were brief moments here and there, but life was mostly shades of gray. Then things got bad and I fell apart. I let everything go and went into enormous debt. Then one day, I started crying uncontrollably, went on for a week. I went to me doctor, got treatment and have spent the last six or so years repairing my life.

The lesson here is, treat it before it becomes a problem.
