I am on phase two and am looking for protien substitutes. Is cottage an okay alternative?
Today has been a rough day on P2 I have not been feeling good so I have been craving carbs. I have been at a friend's house watching her daughter and there has been a bunch of temptation around. I unfortunately took a bite of a strawberry shortcake little Debbie; I spit it out when I realized how foolish I was being. However with as oily, sugar and fat filled those things are I'm bound to gain just from chewing it up ![]() |

A lot of cottage cheese brands also contain a lot of sodium, which could cause some water retention. I have tried it only once on a previous round and it caused me to stall. I would use caution, but you will only know how it affects you if you try it for yourself. Just make sure there are no forbidden ingredients if you do go ahead and try it. Some people also use protein shakes as an alternative to meat or fish, but not all people lose well with them. Again, it's really something you have to try for yourself to see if it works for you.

Dr. Simeons says this about vegetarians, with the caution that they will lose at half the rate: "Strict vegetarians such as orthodox Hindus present a special problem, because milk and curds are the only animal protein they will eat. To supply them with sufficient protein of animal origin they must drink 500 cc. of skimmed milk per day, though part of this ration can be taken as curds."
I would say that means you can eat some cottage cheese (curds), but you should do so with caution. I have eaten cottage cheese a few times on the diet and had good losses the days I ate it. I used Nancy's 1% cottage cheese, which had fewer calories than some of the nonfat cottage cheeses I had seen and definitely had fewer additives. As for the sodium content, I have really low sodium and regularly drink salt water, so that wasn't of much concern to me. You can also, on occasion, eat 1 whole egg + 3 egg whites as a protein choice if you are developing an aversion to meat. |
