Default Best Protein Bar Option
Any suggestions on a decent protein bar that would be readily available in a common store? I am in P4 but have been eating primarily P3 style with the occasional beer, Flat Out, or slice of Ezekiel bread.

I eat chocolate delight after dinner every night but would love something sweet in the afternoon too if possible. I remember doing LA Weight Loss and they had me eating two of their chocolate protein bars per day and it really helped keep my cravings at bay.

Any made with stevia? Trying to avoid artificial sweeteners.

I like Lara bars. They are only fruit and nuts. You can pronounce every ingredient and I don't feel like there is any "junk" in them. However, they are high in carbs (fruit) and lower in protein. So, I use them as a snack, not as a meal replacement. You can get them at Target, Walmart, Trader Joes and Whole Foods.
I've also tried Quest bars. They have more protein and fewer carbs, but you can't get them in stores. I ordered a box from their website.

Hope that helps.

i think the quest bars are about as good as it gets, for high protein, low carbs and high fiber. they do use splenda for a sweetener, but you have to use something... i thought they were pretty good but there are only 2 flavors.

the lara bars are good but only if you're not eating a lot of fat, because dates are extremely high in sugar.

Or, you can make your own. I made some with chocolate whey protein, peanut butter, flax meal and water. You could add nuts or dried fruit also.

jan- i just looked at the link and they say 27 carbs, 8 of which are sugar alcohols, 8 of fiber. so there should be 11 net carbs. where do you get the 3??

Found this recipe in the Fall 2008 of Clean Eating:

Peanut Butter Fudge Bars- serves 4
4 scoops chocolate protein powder
2/3 cup flax meal
4 tbsp. peanut butter ( guess I should try almond butter )
1/4 cup water
stevia to taste

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Just keep stirring, it will come together into a blob. If not, a little bit more water is okay 1 tbsp at a time.
Divide into 4 equal portions, and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Form into a "bar" or just a log shape.
Store in the fridge.

Next time I will probably add some chopped nuts and dried apples. My husband loved them.

I will be making these! I use a lot of protein powder already, so this is right up my alley. I am trying to think of ways to use vanilla powder too. Vanilla and the peanutbutter or almond butter would be good. Maybe vanilla and add in some sugar free caramel or toffee syrup. (It's rogue but I do not gain from the SF coffee syrups.) Strawberry protein powder with the almond butter would probably be good. Wow, this opens up a whole new world for me! Can you tell it doesn't take a lot to make me happy? I live a pretty simple life. lol

Margie (is that right?)...copied info from the website. On the wrapper it says: 3g Glucose Impact Carbs*. Let me see what the * is all about. Oh gosh, I need a magnifying glass. Here it is: "Glucose Impact Carbs are defined by Metagenics as those that would have a moderate to substantial effect on raising blood sugar."

I'm a fan of the Metagenics peanut butter crunch fusion bar, too, even in P2. I use it very sparingly, though, just slicing a 1/4 inch piece or two for a taste of sweetness after my spicy chili, for instance. The clinic where I get my HCG sells them, with the caveat that you don't want to depend on them a lot during P2. I wanted "emergency" food for times when I haven't been able to prepare. They were also handy when I was on a hike with family and ran out of steam.

Margie, I'm not a big shake fan either, but MRM brand 100% all natural whey is very good.

Dutch Chocolate
Rich Vanilla

I have the vanilla... it is good by itself. I also add banana or orange extract for a different flavor. I also believe, if I remember correctly, there is a coupon on the iHerb.com site for $5 off your first order.
