US researchers have found that red meat may cause bladder cancer. According to the study, the nitrates and nitrites that are added to cold meats to preserve and enhance their color and flavor may induce tumors in organs such as bladder. Although, they found no link between bacon, beef, steak, sausage, hamburger and bladder cancer.
Researchers studied the intakes of nitrates, nitrites and other components found in red meat, in 300,000 participants (men and women aged 50-71). After 8 years, they made a follow up and found that 854 of the participants were diagnosed with bladder cancer. Their conclusions were, those who eat foods high in nitrites, not just meats, are 28-29% greater chance of developing bladder cancer. Now we all know that preserved foods especially those containing nitrites are not good for the body. If you have to eat meat, choose the fresh, lean cut ones. Source: MedIndia |
