i think there are fiber chewables that taste fruity and they are 2 grams of carbs per tablet. And i think you take them twice a day. I used those and they worked well. Also maybe 4 or 5 liters of water would help if you can force it down. Then of course eating green veggies does wonders also.

And just a little thing that i noticed. If you take breakfast sausage (uncooked) and cook it on the skillet it becomes very greasy (like all sausage) but when you ate 4 or 5 links (1 or 2 grams of carbs) after 12 hours or so the grease from the sausage cuts through whatever you have blocked up and makes things much easier to pass. Sounds gross but all these things have worked for me and kept me as regular as you can be on this diet. Hope that helped.

Prevention is worth MORE than a pound of cure with constipation. Work on preventing it this time. IF it happens, take something. Especially if it's so bad you were reduced to tears. That's not good. Take a fiber supplement to prevent it... take a laxative to fix it.

Beside adding fiber (some bodies need more than others... so find YOUR requirement) you can:

Drink water but all at once, be sure to spread it out over the day.
Eat your veggie raw whenever possible.
Spread the veggie out over the day.
WALK, WALK, WALK. Get your lower body moving... that keeps things down there moving, too.
Pay attention to how your body responds to different foods... one thing that will bind me up might turn you into a goose. Know those foods. Avoid the binding ones (like cheeses for me) and be sure to get the others often (like sausage for Zook).

Good luck!

Yep this is a weird thing. I have had it really bad in the early days. But I found that i had to pace out my cheesy things and then not the slightest problem. Stick with it. It is the only way for me. Starving and rabbit food is not good.

Desertrose, can you increase your salad and veggie intake at all, for all that "bulk" that the digestive system has to "work on" to move it through? That helps fill you up IF you still have some grams of NET carbs to get to your 20. Be sure you are counting NET carbs (total carbs-fiber) and less is NOT better.

Drinking fluids helps fill you up. As well as some lovely creamed cheese or butter which makes you fill "sated" (full) better than no-fat foods. Be sure they are in your plan.

Mid-day allowable snacks are good, so the body ALWAYS has something to work on. Some olives, a bit of Laughing Cow cheese on celery or flax crackers. A pickle, maybe. Shaved ham or turkey. Nibble a little if you are hungry.

Never STAY hungry...find something you can have, as that is what makes this plan SO different than WW and other low-fat or low-calorie plans.

My best to you!

hey desertrose...yes, hunger is one of those things that can hit hard, then go away...but in the meantime, add lots more fat to your eating until the hunger goes (and it will, can't remember how long it took for me...maybe have a look at my thread). i was absolutley starving, and got on the forums for help - the answer was always the same: eat lots more fat for a while. so add cream cheese to your veggies, lots of butter, mayo etc. it will go. trust me

also - ditto on the flax...a Godsend, really! but do drink some more water with it and yes, take a laxative (try a stool-softener laxative mix if you can find one) every now and then (NOT everyday) if you need it. no need to suffer, my girl!

This was a big issue for me at first and in the beginning Jan 09 was painful enough.I found that it settled down after about 3 months and I now go about once per week without problem but as gross as it is its always substantial. Plus I had the problem of being on some meds at first that also caused side effects of cconstipation. This has the added effect of making me be sensible about weighing in only doing it after a motion so no scale obsession.

I have now been at my goal weight 147lbs for 3 months and am maintaining lovely using the Atkins for life book for inspiration and recipes.

Don't let constipation put you off it does pass( no pun intended) keep going. This diet works and I can't recommend it highly enough just keep on going. If Atkins wanted a UK ambassador then I would happily do it for free the diet has probably given me another 15-20 years life and I have finally shrugged off a lifetime 40 out of 43 years of obeseity because of it.
My pics say it all check the beach photo to now!

Flax...nature's wonderful fiber supplement you can have so many ways!

I don't like flax seeds, but ground flax (flax meal) makes the BEST crackers. They can be zero carbs, because the fiber and carbs net to zero.

There are recipes here for flax crackers, MIM (Muffin in a Minute or One-Minute Muffins) and other flax delights. I like the flax crackers because they take a couple of minutes to whip up and nuke and you can jazz them up with spices and get that "cruncy, savory" taste you might miss on Atkins.

I, too, have had a chronic problem since childhood, but it is actually BETTER on Atkins because of the water, the fiber in the veggies and the flax! (If I forget the above and slack off for a few days, however, it's B-A-C-K!)

Don't depend on laxatives, but by all means do whatever is necessary to get things moving again. You will feel so much better. And be a pound or so lighter too!

Good luck! You WILL lose those 20 pounds!!
