I started at 165.
In the first week of doing atkins I lost 5lbs which put me down to 160. I know most of that was water ... but still ... 2nd week I lost 2lbs which put me down to 158lbs. 3rd week I lost nothing. I seem to be losing and regaining the same lb all the time. I know its still early days but I'm desperate to get down below the 154lb barrier. Is it normal to lose nothing at all for a week or two? |

Hi
I am concerned I may be in that position this week as well. Weigh in tomorrow as only weigh once a week. Today my monthlies have started and I feel really bloated and my jeans are tight again which is worrying me! I also dont have loads to loose (was 20lb and as at last week had lost 7). Where do we go from here? Should we be eating on an induction basis still or more OWL. I personally use OWL. Am I eating too much? Yesterday I had 2 bacon & 2 eggs for breakfast, then a good salad for lunch & tea. Usually I have veg for tea, no potato but have had a few carrots. I have not been near anything containing wheat or flour! Does sometimes your shape just change rather than loose weight as I am sure i have lost some on my bust but want it to come off on tummy & legs!! |

Thanks for the advice bluehex, I know I'm just being incredibly inpatient and unrealistic. I'm going to try and keep away from the scales for a bit because my clothes are feeling a lot looser.
Lizzin, I'm no expert but I've read a few times that sometimes when the scales stay put, you are still losing inches. Although the scales tell me I'm losing no weight, my jeans are feeling baggy around teh stomach and legs and my husband tells me I'm "definately" losing weight, no matter what the scales say (and he's the type that would tell me if I wasn't!) I am doing OWL. I never did induction as I didn't have much to lose but I still think about giving it a go sometimes. When you say you had salad for lunch and dinner, did you have any meat with that? As I say, I'm certainly no expert but I'm concerned you may not getting the fat/protein needed for the diet to work properly. Perhaps someone with better knowledge may correct me on that one? From what I understand, not eating ENOUGH can cause stalls. ![]() |

Hang in there...stay true to the plan...it DOES and WILL come off. (UNLESS you are cheating! Look hard at your intake...are carbs creeping in? If not, keep reading.)
Nagging you ALL - take your measurements...right now! Write them down and make a chart. You will be glad you did! My best to you all! Toni |

Hi Enchliada
Thought I would update you with my results this weekend...basically no weight loss!! I am exactly the same to the eighth of a pound as last week!! I have my period so I am hoping I am retaining something and actually I have lost a couple of pounds but I suppose the initial 7lb loss is still evident and none has gone on! So more of the same this week for me and I really would like to fit some exercise in as well and I think that would help me, but not sure if I will. Also I did do some measurements at the beginning or rather my husband did but when I checked last week it was difficult to notice any changes in fact some were more so I am not convinced he was doing it properly. I think I will measure again next week and see! |

Lizzin, I'm on a complete stall too but I think that's my own fault (details in next post!). I think we just have to keep at it. Since my cravings have stopped, I don't really think about going back to my old way of eating anyway so I'm going to try and enjoy my food and step away from the scales for a while.

I am on a stall too
![]() I was doing 600-cal a day and losing 4 pounds per week untill I was 199 pounds and stopped losing weight, so I decided to water fast and for 10 days I was good to it and ate nothing just drank water! I lost a lot and went to 188 pounds in 10 days, I am 21 years old and 161cm (5ft 3) Then I started eating again and up I went to 194 pounds in 3 days (water retention I know), first week of atkins I lost 2 pounds (exercising everyday, my hubby ate twice as much as me, did nothing and lost 10 pounds!), the second week I lost another 2 pounds but today (2 days after losing 2 pounds) I checked again and I put the 2 pounds on! no TOM and yesterday and the day before I was really good, I am eating 800 calories but can't manage any more! It's too much food! I drink water like a fish and been exercising LOTS, I've been reading lots of topics about people on stall but nobody quite like me ![]() I do have a lazy thiroid and doctor said I need 150mg but he will have to increase slowly from 75mg (what I was taking 4 months ago) to 150mg, I am taking 125mg at the moment and will have to wait three months before I am with 150mg but I don't want seat here and turn into a ball as I wait for my tablets to be right! |

Wow... 600 calories isn't enough to sustain normal body functions for a day. That sounds really really unhealthy to me. That, combined with what you call a fast is really nothing more than a crash diet, and is not a solution for healthy, long term weightloss. I'm not sure how much you're trying to lose, or how fast you think you need to lose it, bit you'll hurt yourself in the long run if you don't take a slow and steady approach to getting healthy.
If your stomach can't hold large portions of food in one sitting then space 6 to 8 meals a day out to about every three hours and have smaller portions. This has worked really well for me, though some people have trouble finding the time to do it. I have nothing but time for a healthy diet if it means years of improved health and weight stability. No quick fixes here. |

Ollie, I like the idea of spreading on diffrent meals, still losing nothing, 3 weeks have gone by on really strict induction, lots of exercise and only 2 pounds lost!
I am not after any quick fix, I am just after any way of losing weight, I am quite overweight and have been fighting for 4 years, I have a under active thyroid and if I eat more than 600 calories I put weight on, i started with 1400 and went reducing untill I lost weight and that was 600 calories a day! only people with same problem knows what it feels like, but anyway got a new doctor and he seems to be increasing my levels for the first time but it is a slow process, have to wait 3-4 to get more synthroyd meanwhile I don't want seat here and get fatter. anyway, will try to spread the meals and give a go on eating a bit more, just nor sure how much you supposed to eat?? will eat as much as needed to get to 12g of carbs and see how it goes (I will prob put weight on but need to give a go). thanks |

Make sure that you're discussing your eating habits and calorie intake with your physician then. It may take that med adjustment, or spacing your meals, or maybe another type of diet altogether, but no doctor will ever tell you that it's safe to stop eating for 10 days. You put your body into thinking it's starving, which lowers your metabolism even further.
If you haven't already read the book, go get it now! The science is in there. |

Hello Ollie,
I really like your idea of having several small meals and so far it is working good for me. I'd like to let clear that the water fasting was NOT a recommedation of Dr Atkins, it was before dr. Atkins. I've read the orange book and now reading the 2009 version by 2 doctors. Fasting is a very old practice, older than the Atkins diet but as controversial as dr atkins. I don't want discuss it here as this is Atkins discussion board, I did 10 days and it was really good for my body and mind, lots of people very do 40days fasting and I've heard of a very obese guy who went over a year with vitamins only (he was under medical supervision btw, don't even think on doing it at home ![]() |

Spiritual fasting, yes. I am familiar with what many of those entail, since I am in no way an expert. But there are so many unhealthy crash diets and fads that involve dieting that one can jump to the conclusionthat that's what you were referring to. But the reason I will continue with the Atkins way of eating is because my Doctor supports me in that decision. If I told him that I was going to completely stop eating for a fast he would almost certainly advise me that it wasn't a good or healthy idea.
If your doctor has advised you that a fast is a good idea I'll clam up and never say a word about it again ![]() But you have my support in your Atkins journey, 100%! So smaller meals is helping? What is your menu starting to look like? Have you weighed recently? |

Hi girls,
Well, I didn't discuss fasting with my doctor but I did discuss Atkins and he think it is wrong and doesn't agree with it, I did mention to him in a diffrent visit that I had to eat 600 calories to lose weight and he laughed, told him a second time to make sure he heard cause I thought he'd be shocked but he just smiled again (he was in a good mood as I had lost some weight). Even thou some doctors will think Atkins is OK the majority of them still think it is wrong. I was refused kentose sticks at Boots drugstore then I went to ASDA pharmacist just to be told off for half an hour by a pharmacist at Asda that told me I was a crazy person trying to kill myself, that Atkins was so unhealthy and I must stop it and then refused me the ketose sticks too. When I tell people I am doing Atkins they look at me and I know they are thinking: " Why are you doing this to yourself?" Yet I believe Atkins and I am gonna stick with it. Atkins has been tested for over 30 years and fasting for over 2000 years, people lose weight both ways and it is good to know that you guys respect other people views and believes cause you know how hard it is to do a controversial diet and have people judging you and thinking you are crazy. I believe in both but Atkins gives me really good energy despite a methobolism problem as fasting puts me on a mood and I sleep all day! Anyway, two days have passed by and I still on the same weight, not losing but at least not putting on, exercising lots, no results, not a inch lost around my tummy. I am trying to eat either 1 sausage or 2 rashers of bacon for dinner plus a tomato (I confess sometimes I dont have time ot eat the tomato), at 10 I have a small cheese snack, at dinner 100g lettuce or spinach and some meat with 30ml ceasar sauce (1.5g carb), then at 4 another 20g cheese snack and dinner time is meat plus brocolli e cauliflower. I am not a vegetable person to be sincere, I love sweetcorn and peas but I am not allowed so tried brocolli and cowliflower and thought it is ok if I chew fast, so really don't like any veggies, just trying to eat it. I always change the meat I eat, it can be grilled bacon, chicken, beef brisket, rybeye, pork lean steaks and so on.. I don't eat eggs so this is a no no. I am thinking on doing Atkins fat fast if I don't lose weight by the end of the week.. anyone ever done Atkins FF? |

Two days is NOT enough to gauge weight loss. Two WEEKS might be. Did you really measure your waist after just two days?
I'm worried about your preoccupation with losing weight fast... I'm afraid it's going to come back and bite you in the butt. Lose it fast and you'll gain it back even faster. The worst part about that is when you lose you don't just lose body fat... you also lose lean tissue (muscle). No matter which diet you do, you will lose muscle. BUT, when you gain weight you ONLY GAIN FAT. This is why yo-yoing is so bad. You'll end up at the same (or higher) weight but you'll be fatter at that same weight than you were when you started. Nobody wants that. I get that you have thyroid issues. Because of it, you'll need to practice even more patience. Wouldn't you rather lose 1/2 to 1 pound of mostly fat per week... than lose any more muscle? I'll be quiet about this now because I think it's a message you simply aren't ready to hear. But I'll wish you much success and I hope you're able to get your meds working in your favor soon. As for the fat fast... read that chapter again and then decide if you truly fit the criteria for using it. |
