OK - female, early 60s need to lose about another 3 stone.
Typical consumption: 2 scrambled eggs cooked in unsalted butter for breakfast. Lunch: stick of celery, 2ins of cucumber, few slices of raw pepper, tablespoon cream cheese, prawn/tuna/chicken (not all at once) sometimes a teaspoon of peanut butter, 2oz. cheddar cheese, sometimes lettuce with little mayo, sometimes an omelette with mushrooms or cheese or some bacon. Sugar-free jelly Dinner: Either poached salmon, chicken, steak or other roasted meat. 6oz cauliflower or broccoli or cabbage or a bit of all. Suger-free jelly with a tablespoon or two of double cream. 1 tin diet pepsi a day, about 3 litres of water, 4 or 5 cups black coffee. Meds for high blood pressure. I have tried cutting out the cheese as it is high in calorie if not in netcarbs. Cut out the olive oil I used to use as a salad dressing. Tried upping water and restricting processed meat - it worked to start with so I can't be doing too much wrong. Must be too many calories I think but it is the high calorie stuff like cream cheese that adds some moisture to the rest of the food. Every time I have tried to adjust what I eat I give it a week to see if it makes any difference. Hope that gives you some idea ? |

Some people can't have dairy... add the EVOO back in, ditch the cheese/cream. Up your veggie intake. Count your carbs... I know it's a pain, but in the beginning you HAVE to count every fraction of carbohydrate that you eat. Not only so you don't eat too much, but so you eat ENOUGH of the RIGHT (veggie) carbs. I can't tell from what you posted if you're eating correctly... and if I don't know, you can't know. Keep a food journal for the first two weeks. Tally up the carbs so you're sure. Watch the limits... only 3 sugar free selections per day, for example. Only 3 to 4 oz of cheese per day (are you over that?). And those sugar free items DO have carbs... count each non-nutritive sweetener packet as one carb, each diet soda is one, your jelly is one. The sweetener doesn't have carbs in it... but the filler (maltodextrin) they use does!!!
Those are my off the cuff suggestions! Hope it helps. |

What is EVOO?? To be honest if I couldn't have the cream cheese to moisten stuff I would pack it in altogether. I do count my carbs. I have a postitnote on my laptop and add everything up each day. Usually between 14-19 a day. I haven[t just started the diet, I have been doing it since April with a good weight loss the first 6 weeks and have been counting the netcarbs since day 1 Today I have had:
2 scrambled eggs 0.5oz mushrooms 1 stick of celery, 2oz cucumber, 1 tablespoon of cream cheese 2oz prawns a slice of smoked salmon and half a tin of tuna Tonight I will have a breast quarter of chicken with 6oz cauliflower and 6oz broccoli and possibly 1tablespoon of cream cheese followed by a quarter pint of sugar free jelly and a tablespoon of double cream I don't use a sugar substitute at all and only have the 2 x sugar free jellies a day, sometimes only one if I am short of time. I never have more than 2oz cheddar cheese at a time and only once a week max as I did think the number of calories were high What I don't understand is why , if the first 6 weeks the weight was falling off, that now I am not even when I have reduced the portion size of the meat I am eating. I think my body seems to have got used to the lack of carbs and sugar and is quite happy lol. I did wonder if it was worth a week off the diet to jump start my system again but the worry would be if I put some back on. |

Hi Enchliada
Thought I would update you with my results this weekend...basically no weight loss!! I am exactly the same to the eighth of a pound as last week!! I have my period so I am hoping I am retaining something and actually I have lost a couple of pounds but I suppose the initial 7lb loss is still evident and none has gone on! So more of the same this week for me and I really would like to fit some exercise in as well and I think that would help me, but not sure if I will. Also I did do some measurements at the beginning or rather my husband did but when I checked last week it was difficult to notice any changes in fact some were more so I am not convinced he was doing it properly. I think I will measure again next week and see! |

Lizzin, I'm on a complete stall too but I think that's my own fault (details in next post!). I think we just have to keep at it. Since my cravings have stopped, I don't really think about going back to my old way of eating anyway so I'm going to try and enjoy my food and step away from the scales for a while.

I am on a stall too
![]() I was doing 600-cal a day and losing 4 pounds per week untill I was 199 pounds and stopped losing weight, so I decided to water fast and for 10 days I was good to it and ate nothing just drank water! I lost a lot and went to 188 pounds in 10 days, I am 21 years old and 161cm (5ft 3) Then I started eating again and up I went to 194 pounds in 3 days (water retention I know), first week of atkins I lost 2 pounds (exercising everyday, my hubby ate twice as much as me, did nothing and lost 10 pounds!), the second week I lost another 2 pounds but today (2 days after losing 2 pounds) I checked again and I put the 2 pounds on! no TOM and yesterday and the day before I was really good, I am eating 800 calories but can't manage any more! It's too much food! I drink water like a fish and been exercising LOTS, I've been reading lots of topics about people on stall but nobody quite like me ![]() I do have a lazy thiroid and doctor said I need 150mg but he will have to increase slowly from 75mg (what I was taking 4 months ago) to 150mg, I am taking 125mg at the moment and will have to wait three months before I am with 150mg but I don't want seat here and turn into a ball as I wait for my tablets to be right! |

Wow... 600 calories isn't enough to sustain normal body functions for a day. That sounds really really unhealthy to me. That, combined with what you call a fast is really nothing more than a crash diet, and is not a solution for healthy, long term weightloss. I'm not sure how much you're trying to lose, or how fast you think you need to lose it, bit you'll hurt yourself in the long run if you don't take a slow and steady approach to getting healthy.
If your stomach can't hold large portions of food in one sitting then space 6 to 8 meals a day out to about every three hours and have smaller portions. This has worked really well for me, though some people have trouble finding the time to do it. I have nothing but time for a healthy diet if it means years of improved health and weight stability. No quick fixes here. |

Ollie, I like the idea of spreading on diffrent meals, still losing nothing, 3 weeks have gone by on really strict induction, lots of exercise and only 2 pounds lost!
I am not after any quick fix, I am just after any way of losing weight, I am quite overweight and have been fighting for 4 years, I have a under active thyroid and if I eat more than 600 calories I put weight on, i started with 1400 and went reducing untill I lost weight and that was 600 calories a day! only people with same problem knows what it feels like, but anyway got a new doctor and he seems to be increasing my levels for the first time but it is a slow process, have to wait 3-4 to get more synthroyd meanwhile I don't want seat here and get fatter. anyway, will try to spread the meals and give a go on eating a bit more, just nor sure how much you supposed to eat?? will eat as much as needed to get to 12g of carbs and see how it goes (I will prob put weight on but need to give a go). thanks |

Make sure that you're discussing your eating habits and calorie intake with your physician then. It may take that med adjustment, or spacing your meals, or maybe another type of diet altogether, but no doctor will ever tell you that it's safe to stop eating for 10 days. You put your body into thinking it's starving, which lowers your metabolism even further.
If you haven't already read the book, go get it now! The science is in there. |

Hello Ollie,
I really like your idea of having several small meals and so far it is working good for me. I'd like to let clear that the water fasting was NOT a recommedation of Dr Atkins, it was before dr. Atkins. I've read the orange book and now reading the 2009 version by 2 doctors. Fasting is a very old practice, older than the Atkins diet but as controversial as dr atkins. I don't want discuss it here as this is Atkins discussion board, I did 10 days and it was really good for my body and mind, lots of people very do 40days fasting and I've heard of a very obese guy who went over a year with vitamins only (he was under medical supervision btw, don't even think on doing it at home ![]() |

Spiritual fasting, yes. I am familiar with what many of those entail, since I am in no way an expert. But there are so many unhealthy crash diets and fads that involve dieting that one can jump to the conclusionthat that's what you were referring to. But the reason I will continue with the Atkins way of eating is because my Doctor supports me in that decision. If I told him that I was going to completely stop eating for a fast he would almost certainly advise me that it wasn't a good or healthy idea.
If your doctor has advised you that a fast is a good idea I'll clam up and never say a word about it again ![]() But you have my support in your Atkins journey, 100%! So smaller meals is helping? What is your menu starting to look like? Have you weighed recently? |
