I was wondering if anyone else out there is having an issue similar to mine. Between 2003 and 2007 I was on Atkins and lost a total of 90 pounds. I went off to college, and was unable to maintain the low carb lifestyle while adjusting, and put 50 pounds back on since. I have been on phase 1 of the diet for 2 weeks, being very strict about it, but I have not seen any significant weight loss like I had before. I remember when I first started it in '03, I dropped about 15 pounds in my first two weeks. I have yet to break the 5 pound mark after more than 2 weeks and it seems to be much slower than before. I read that Atkins has changed their way of counting carbs in terms of glycogen count in their products since I have stopped using them (they subtract glycogen count from total carbs now instead of just sugar alcohols and dietary fiber). Could this new way of counting carbs on their products be the difference for me? I do have about one bar and one shake per day.

It very common for any subsequent attempts at low carb to not have the same results... there are many reasons for this. You're older, your lifestyle is probably different, your body is different... you've lost and then regained. When you lost 90# it wasn't all fat loss. It never is. But when you gained 50# virtually all of it was fat gain. So your body composition is different now.
I can't eat Atkins products. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol... it's just not recognized by the FDA the same as sorbitol, etc. You should know that many individuals can and do metabolize a percentage of sugar alcohols. The general "safe" rule of thumb is to deduct only half the sugar alcohol carbs. Your body may be using some of those carbs... so you're not actually eating as few as you think. Ditch the products... see what happens. And, sorry to say... expect it to take longer this time. It's just the way it works. |
