i've been on atkins since 08/31. the first week i lost about 10 pounds. now every time i step on the scale it says i've gained a pound and i haven't lost anything for days. i do high intensity exercise almost daily, i haven't cheated so far and i drink at least 60 oz of water daily. am i doing something wrong? i've had ketosis breath since day 3, today is day 12 and i noticed that it's not nearly as prevalent as it once was. am i slipping out of ketosis?

Hi Jaseofbase,
There are a number of things that could be going on. First, do you trust your scale? Is it one of those digital scales that gives you a different weight everytime you step on it, even within five minutes? Second, if you are doing high intensity exercise almost every day, you are building muscle which is a very good thing! You will lose body fat much faster when you have more muscle. However, muscle weighs more than fat, so if you are losing fat and gaining muscle, the scale will read it as a weight gain. Ignore it! If that's what's happening, your clothes will feel more loose, your body will feel tighter and more toned. You've lost fat and that's the important thing, not your weight. Don't stop exercising--a muscular body requires a lot more calories than a non-muscular body, so you will burn more calories and fat every day if you have more muscle. It will get you where you want to go in the long run. Third, you could be taking in hidden carbs. Some of the culprits are salad dressings, catsup and other condiments; sugar in processed foods like hot dogs and sausages and peanut butter; and milk in your coffee. If you're following the Atkins Induction rules, it is highly unlikely that you are actually putting on a pound of body fat per day. You could post the foods you've been eating if you'd like more detailed advice. Good luck! |

Hi there, I agree with Karen 100%
Put away the scale and get out your measuring tape. I was going through the samething with my scale until I decided to just put it away because it can de-motivate you if it isn't going down. Now I go by how my clothes fit and the inches that I've lost. Also you probably are gaining muscle. I go to the gym now 5 days a week doing spinning and fit boxing so I know that I'm gaining more muscle and losing fat which is what you want in the long run. my starting inches were: waist 35 hips 43 and thighs 27 now its: waist 27.5 hips 40.5 and thighs 25. That's motivation for me enough to keep on going.. hang in there.. This forum is great |
