I have been on the Atkins diet since March and have had impressive results (losing nearly 50 lbs).
I recently went on vacation and decided to reward myself by deviating from the diet for a few days. Whilst I didn't go crazy on sweets (I don't have much of a sweet tooth), I did have quite a bit of carbs in the way of potatoes, bread & beer. I knew I would obviously gain weight during my holiday, but was actually pretty shocked to see that I gained 6 lbs in 10 days. Given that the first huge loss of weight during induction is due to the loss of stored water needed for glucose, is it safe to assume that the majority of this rapid weight gain is water weight as well? Please tell me this is the case, as I can't see how I could have gained 6 lbs of fat in 10 days. I am now back on induction and hope to see this gain wiped out very soon. |

decided to reward myself by deviating from the diet for a few days. In any case, I would bet half of the weight gain is "water weight" and the rest is probably some fat. Beer, bread and potatoes are well known to cause bloat. Just do induction and go for a run and you'll detox the crap out in no time. Congrats on the weight loss. Keep it up! And, if you feel the need to tap into those naughty carbs again (we are all human)....do the deed within 60 minutes of first consumption and then STOP. This limits the damage to your body and keeps your insulin production stable. |

If you ate like that for 10 days, you're lucky you only gained 6 pounds!! You're obviously way out of ketosis and will need to focus on getting back there. It may be harder than the first time (subsequent attempts are usually harder and don't work as well... just so you know). But don't let that stop you! Hit induction levels again and right away. Some of that gain will be from water.. you've restored your glycogen supply and switched back to a glucose based metabolism. It takes 2 g of water to store 1 g of glycogen. So yes, some of it is water. Is all of it? I doubt that very much. When you started feeding your body carbs it was still burning fat... so until the body made the switch back, you were probably storing most of those carbs (glucose) as fat.
Good luck!!!! Tril |
