Hi guys,
My husband is very thin... 145 at 5'10", right at 26 years old and decently active like me. He wanted to go on the diet with me to help me and especially to break his own carb addiction and alter our whole family's way of eating. However, he only has, at max, 10 pounds to lose. I can't convince him to just go onto the OWL phase because he really wants to go through the jumpstart to Ketosis and get his body to let go of carbs. (We're of Taoist/Buddhist beliefs and it's important to us to let go of things we are addicted to.) He wants to do this partially as a spiritual thing, but also to make sure his body doesn't have a carb addition. The problem is that he is getting diarrhea and a general combination of nausea, moderate cramping (directly before the diarrhea) and general ill feeling in his stomach. He has NO other symptoms to suggest that he is sick and he rarely ever becomes so, thus I'm of the belief that the diet is causing it. [Edit] I tried to post a pic to give his build but the forum won't let me post it. It's at www . arsieiuni . net / about . html ... there's two pics of him on the right under the section "Rohan" Any information or help is appreciated! Should I really push him to go on to the OWL Stage? Is this problem likely related or is it alright or ... any advice? Thanks! Shei |

I don't know if it's what he's eating, or how he's eating. He's trying to do the induction phase and I don't think he should necessarily do that phase because he's very close to his goal weight... Just wondered if the diet could cause such issues to anyone?
He's eating eggs, meats and cheeses... I couldn't give you an exact menu but he's eaten eggs and smoked sausage for breakfast, totless casserole for lunch (hamburger meat, cream of chicken and mushroom soup, some onion and some cheese) and flounder with shrimp for dinner... that was yesterday. It's been similar each day. He's not had as much of a problem yesterday as the day before, but I thought it might slow down if he got on into ketosis... I was just wondering if this was kinda like a symptom of the body breaking it's carb addiction or anything? |

Just so you know, he's not really doing Atkins if he's not eating vegetables. The only veggie I see there is a tiny bit of onion. At least look at the acceptable food list on this forum before either of you keep going.

I eat veggies! I love veggies! I have a hard time not eating too much veggies! I have salad and add in veggies wherever I can in my meals.
But my husband is extremely anti-veggie and always has been. I'm trying to add veggies to his diet to help him get into it like he wants, but it may take some work to find some ways to prepare veggies that he'll eat. I put onions in his crustless quiche yesterday and I've got him eating curry right now that has broccoli and mushrooms and onions and he's loving it. I have a printout of the acceptable foods list and all the Induction rules. He's not 100% on guidelines but I am. ![]() Shei |

Sometimes people will get several days of either diarrhea or constipation when they change over to following Atkins. I think the more radical the change (the more carbs someone used to eat) the more likely this kind of problem is.
I would suggest he take an immodium before his next meal. (Just one, not two.) And repeat with a single pill later in the day if he still is having the problem. Sometimes I find that just a little help in restoring things to normal is all that is needed. If he wanted to do Atkins with you - he really needs to read the book and do atkins with you. When it is time for him to be eating more carbs then you - I have found it easy to prepare meals for this - I'll have the meat and a green vegi I serve to all, and I'l fix potatoes or some other carby food as a side dish for those who want/need the carbs. As part of breaking his addiction to carbs - he needs to establish healthy eating habits - and that includes vegi's. GOOD LUCK |

One other thought - is he "sneaking" sugar free sweets someplace? I know if I eat more then about 4g of sugar alcohol's I end up with at least gas, and sometimes worse. Large amounts of SA's produce agony for me.
As little as two sugar-free Jello PUDDINGS can give me a problem for 12 to 24 hours afterward. (Sugar free jello is not a problem - only the puddings.) |

Thanks guys!
No he's not sneaking anything. We're very honest about our diets. The problem did not return today so thankfully I think he's okay! Good to know it's a common enough problem when making the switch! Now I'm not worried anymore ![]() I'll try to get more veggies in his diet. I just have to find ways to make them yummy for him! ![]() Shei |

Hi
Sorry for my English , I am now 12 days od Atkins. First 5 days I had the same problems as your husband. I had diareia , and felt sick. But now all that simptoms had gone, and I am feeling great. It was very difficult for me these 5-6 days , but my body is now adapted. I was said , that is reaction on proteins, if he eats lod of meat. It is not a big problem , his body will adapt soon to the proteins. But he must eat some veggie Bye GOOD LUCK |

Hi Tanjicak!
Your English is fine! Don't worry about it! Where are you from? I am a TEFL English teacher (teacher of English as a foreign language) and I love helping people perfect their natural speaking patterns. I don't mind at all if you don't have it just right. It's great that you can speak so well! The symptoms have gone and he has only felt ill now when he's gone too long between eating... and eating will solve it for him! So I think we have our culprit! Thank you for adding some more evidence to the situation! ![]() Shei |

Thanks ,
I am from Belgrade , Serbia , I am trying to speak English fluently , but I have some problems with writing. I am so glad that I have found here so much people going through the same situation . Last five years I put on 30 kg of extra weight. I had big troubles starting Atkins , because I do not like meat very much. I started with fish , chicken , and small amounts of beef. Now I am feeling OK , and I am loosing my weight. I am satisfied. I have tried all kinds of diets , but I have found that Atkins is the most suitable for me. Because I dont need to cook all the time , I can find in store whatever I need, and it is easy to prepare a meal. I like to cook very much , but when I am on diet I hate it because I always fill guilty for cooking and eating . |

I swear by the "fried rice" recipe I found on the recipe board! It uses cailiflower (grated) to replace the rice, and I swear it tastes so good it makes me swoon.
I am not a veggie person (I am getting much better!) and I had a hard time at first with choking down the veggies needed. I never would have even went anywhere near cailiflower before this recipe. You should check it out, it would be a great way to "sneak" in the veggies for your husband. Plus it tastes soooooo delicious! Good luck, and if you try it, please tell me how you liked it! Steph |

Tanjicak,
Your English is really very good so far! How long have you been studying? My best advice to you for learning more is just to keep practicing and pay attention to how native speakers say things. Reading these forums should help refine your English over time. ![]() I had trouble with fish too. Sometimes I can't eat it if it smells strongly of fish. I can eat Sushi all day because I love raw fish... but cooked fish smells horrible to me. ![]() Stephani, I found the recipe! I'm gonna get some cauliflower at the store and try it! Thanks so much! I'll let you know how we like it ![]() Shei |
