Technically, I just fall asleep without losing consciousness... This is not something that just anyone can do right off the bat, but anyone can train towards it and obtain results quite easily. All you have to do is try and catch yourself falling asleep, waking yourself up every time you "go under"; after a while, you'll build a reflex that causes you to remain aware for a while after you've fallen asleep...
Using willpower alone though won't yield many results... You'll want to use alarms or other means of waking yourself up so you can try staying in that equilibrium between awake and asleep for long periods of time, several times a night. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes, and in just a couple of days you can already feel changes happening in your sleep.
