I've tried bells on collars too but didn't find them much success. I used to put a lot of work into feeding wild birds and making my garden suitable for them but when I got my cats I had to stop doing that since it only encourages birds into the garden-of-death. I think the only thing you can do is make sure you're not actually encouraging birds into your garden, don't feed them etc and hope for the best.

I have a big problem with frogs right now! Cleo loves them and keeps bringing them in but she doesn't kill them, just releases them. I never knew how loud british frogs could scream until my cat decided to play with one, they make an awful racket then.
