Besides sight hounds what breeds do you believe/ know are the fastest? I tried looking it up and I can't find anything that talks about non-sight hound breeds

That's a good question. I don't know of any breeds besides sighthounds that have been tested or selectively bred for speed. Mallinois maybe? I really don't know.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the lean, racy type APBT with the powerful back haunches should reasonably be a fast dog just judging on build.

My Doberman is also extremely fast. Obviously not as fast as a sighthound, but the only dog who can keep up with her in play is her favorite doggy-friend, a Malinois named Anja... and I'm going to say that judging on what I have seen, she is faster than Anja.

I don't really know for sure, but I will say, Dobermans were the next fastest dogs I've seen to my Greyhounds. They could eventually overtake the Greys b/c their endurance was so much better. Great Danes are also very fast w/ their long legs, especially the lighter built ones.

I would love to know how fast Jack (Boston Terrier) can go. He ran with the Greyhounds and could keep up easily and eventually pass them. He is freakin fast for a little smooshfaced dog!

I'd venture to say border collies and the like and then some of the gundogs like brittanys.

I was thinking BCs, too. They're speedy lil buggers! My friend's Dalmatian has a lot of speed, too. Those are really the only dogs I can think of lol

As far as nonSighthounds... I would think Dobermans would be really fast.

Hmmm, I'd have to lean towards the BC idea, maybe a leaner ACD or Kelpie. Though I haven't seen many in action.

An Alaskan Husky maybe? or Eurohound, given there's no sighthound influence. All Dobies I've seen so far (including Sch videos and in person at CAT tests) have been midspeedish and not that fast. Which is interesting... Cliff, do you have a video of a Dobie you'd consider fast? Maybe the ones I saw were just weren't in that great of shape physically.

I'd bet some of the terriers could haul ass. I've seen some GSPs that seemed pretty fast and had the build for it, but never got to see them run all out.

After watching Sako and my friends SBT's run a lure course though, I wouldn't discredit them either. I can't wait til November for Sako to run the LC again; they have a radar gun and I'm going to make sure to ask how fast he goes!

I think just like people, certain dogs will have the natural athletic ability to be fast. Certain breeds may display aptitude for it as a whole, but some individuals may be crazy fast.

I have to brag on my little mutt puppy. He is almost six and still the fastest dog I've ever seen. As a youngster, he was blazing fast. I have NEVER seen another dog outrun him. I swear he runs like a sighthound. He has had playdates over the years with dogs I have considered to be very fast, and he makes them look like they're standing still. The only dog that ever came close to catching him was a retired racing greyhound named Gracie. Sometimes she would catch him in a sprint, but she was only able to lead for a few seconds before Henry would overtake her.

It's the damnedest thing I've ever seen. And I've tried lure coursing with him. ZERO interest in the lure. But put another dog (or bunny) out there to chase and he's game.

My Dane is super fast, but has zero agility while running and can't corner worth a damn. But give him a straight run on stable ground and he's gone.

I don't know, I'll look. I can try to get a video of Bonnie in my backyard, but Abbey can't keep up, so she doesn't go full-speed very much unless she's with another fast dog like Anja the malinois.

See my Dobes were all fast. Zeus could run full speed, clear a 6 ft fence w/o even slowing down and hit the ground running. His speed saved his life one time b/c I went for a walk w/o him and My Mother let him outside b/c she thought he needed to go potty and he hit the ground running, cleared the fence and literally sailed right infront of a F250 going about 40MPH, cleared the school fence and made it to me while I still hadn't let my breath out! He ran daily with Greyhounds and even when they were hitting full speed, he was never more than a few lengths behind him and would pass them once they began slowing. And I he was around 7 yrs old at this point.

Gunner was fast as hell too, but he has a weak rear and couldn't jump worth a damn. Plus all my foster Dobes were very fast.

That is Jack. He is fast and soooo competitive. He has to out run everyone so he can turn around and bite them in the face!

Min Pins are fast as heck too. I've chased my fair share of them little buggers b/c they won't freakin come back if they get loose!

Dogos are slow, but they keep going and going. Slow and steady!

I've known a few foxhounds and foxhounds mixes that were fast as hell. The young male at my shelter right now is next to impossible to catch.
