Growing up we always left of labs out together. It wasn't until I joined here that I even thought about separating dogs. My parents still leave their dogs together, 11 year old female lab, 5 year old female lab and 1.5 year old mini poodle. Right now my second Dane is just a pup so he's crated anyway, but they will always be separated since they're both makes and the pup will be intact. I have an 8x4 kennel in a spare room, so they'll just take turns in there when we leave. Next year when we rent my parent's house we can put up a heavy duty gate and just keep them on different levels.

Depends on a number of things.
The individual dogs, the area they are being left alone in, the exercise they've received prior and how long. Roxy and Hades were left alone together many times. The dh and I's jobs at the time allowed us to be home most of the time, and if one of us wasn't home, it was only for a span of 2-3 three hours. If it was anymore, we took the dogs to my parents, usually because we didn't know how long we were actually going to be. We set the video camera up a few times, Hades went right to bed, and Roxy lied down, patrolled, and intermittently freaked out at things outside. Sometimes Hades would come to look out the window to see what was going on, but then he would retreat back to his bed. I think any breed of dog can get into fights with one another, but I personally do not believe it's necessary, for all dogs to be separated when unsupervised. If you're at all worried about your dogs getting into a scuffle over a toy while your gone, well then they probably should, but there are plenty of multi dog homes out there, probably the number being greater then the other, that leave dogs unsupervised with no issues. The stories you do hear of are likely people that disregarded signs of individual dogs in whatever breed that shouldn't be left alone unsupervised, dogs aren't exercised enough or are left alone too long. |

really this is such a ignorant statement, my toy poodle can easily do damage. Do your dogs have teeth? Then they can fight.. |

What are you talking about my poodle is a cur?
Accidents can happen regardless of the breed and they can all do damage. My childhood dogs were always left out together too but I know the female could be a bitch every once in a blue moon so really they should have been put in separate rooms. And yes you should know how to spell the name of the breed you own.. |

I haven't been around many toy poodles, but I've met some very DA bichons. And believe me, they are NASTY. One of my relatives owns a Bichon, he was probably the only one out of the litter with a decent temperment lol. |

yeah they are feisty, i dont know about nasty though we have a firm hold on ours. we always crate them,so im not arguing against crating. One of the Males tried to freaking kill my old dachshund mutt and his owner (Who is an IDIOT) Is always like "Oh, He's Fine!" |

It depends on the dogs. I separate some, but some I don't. I guess it is a risk you have to willing to take.
Casper and Pongo are in my bedroom when I leave. Circe and Rocky are crated b/c they will fight over food and pee in the house. The rest are left in the living room. Casper is really the only one I would worry about hurting another dog. The rest may squabble, but they would not be out for blood. Casper doesn't quit until I pull him off or the other dog is dead. He has issues with Circe, Rocky and Jack and would love to eat any of them if given a smidgen of a reason too. I will never forget it, it has been about 10 yrs ago, a lady on my Greyhound board came home and found one her Greys dead on the couch. They got into a fight and their skin is so thin, while Frank wasn't trying to kill Iberia the injuries suffered were severe enough that he bled out on her couch. The blood was soaked thru to the carpet. So it can happen with any breed. You just have to do what you feel comfortable with and take the consequences if something happens. The offending dog died of old age not long ago. He was not an aggressive dog and if someone had been home, Iberia could have been saved. But it didn't work out that way. ![]() |

Depending on the dog, I might leave them together. I guess I'll have to wait and see how I feel in the future. If I owned my old SBT and Sunny, they'd be separated since they fought often. I'll admit, since I'm used to keeping dogs together, alone, owning another Bull Breed, it would be hard for me to separate them but I'd try to remind myself the good reasons to separate a Bull breed.
Sunny and Serenity are left alone together. I do worry sometimes about them but they'll stay together for now. They tend to keep away from one another when left alone but I know there's always a risk. |

I admit sometimes I wish I could leave Bonnie and Abbey alone unsupervised. They play great together 90% of the time and I'm tempted to leave them alone outside sometimes and go play video games or get on the computer. But I just have to keep that other 10% in mind... I have been lucky so far. A fight so far has never broken out when I've been away from them. Mini, small scruffles have happened but when I've been around them. |

Also how old is Sunny again? If a fight broke out between the two and he only had a few bite marks, chances of those bites getting infected only increase with age. I thought size mattered but who knows, maybe Serenity could take Sunny down. I hope I never have to find out! |
